UW-La Crosse Wins 24th Straight Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Crown

OSHKOSH, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-La Crosse earned its 24th consecutive Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Championship following two days of competition at the Oshkosh Sports Complex on May 3.
They captured the 50th league title in program archives with 215 points. UW-Oshkosh took second with 163 points, UW-Whitewater third with 109, UW-Eau Claire fourth with 102, UW-Platteville fifth with 79, UW-Stout sixth with 75, UW-Stevens Point seventh with 69, UW-River Falls eighth with 31 and UW-Superior ninth with 15.
UW-La Crosse won four individual titles during the second day of events. Ross Denman claimed the 400-meter dash with a time of 48.40, while Daniel Otto was victorious in the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 14.51.
Grant Havard secured the discus with a heave of 174-1 and Dominique Neloms had a first-place leap of 6-8 3/4 in the high jump.
UW-Oshkosh’s McKena Ramos won the 800-meter run and 1,500-meter run with times of 1:52.69 and 4:00.75, respectively. The Titans also received a first-place finish from Corey Wilch in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles with a time of 52.42. He won the event for the third straight season and became the third individual in conference archives to accomplish the feat, joining UW-Whitewater’s Stuart Elzy (1998-2000) and UW-La Crosse’s Derek Toshner (2002-04).
Wilch was also a member of the winning 4x400-meter relay that posted a time of 3:18.25. He was joined by Mike Servais, Reid Zanoya and Brian Beaudo.
UW-Eau Claire’s Thurgood Dennis claimed the 100-meter dash for the third consecutive year with a conference meet record time of 10.27. He is the third person in WIAC history to win the event three straight seasons, joining Dan Kelner (UW-Superior/1989 and UW-Eau Claire/1990-91) and UW-La Crosse’s Dan Tutskey (1999-2002).
Dennis also contributed to the first-place 4x100-meter relay foursome that posted a time of 41.50. The team also included Brandon Zarnoth, Cory White and Matt Hartje. The Blugolds’ Roger Steen earned the shot put title with a heave of 57-9 3/4.
UW-Stout’s Zach Anderson won the decathlon for the third straight season with 6,838 to become the second individual in WIAC listings to win the event back-to-back-to-back years. UW-Oshkosh’s Aaron Nett accomplished the feat from 1999-2001.
The Blue Devils’ Patrick Jenkins had a first-place time of 15:02.69 in the 5,000-meter run.
UW-Stevens Point’s Jerry Williams claimed the triple jump with a leap of 47-7, while UW-Whitewater’s Dylan Crafton secured the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.65.
UW-Stout’s Zach Anderson received the Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete Award.
Named to the Larry Zirgibel All-Sportsmanship Team were: UW-Eau Claire’s Matt Scott; UW-La Crosse’s Bryan Klister; UW-Oshkosh’s Ryan Gregory; UW-Platteville’s TJ Valley; UW-River Falls’ Christian Kressin; UW-Stevens Point’s Eric Osterdyk; UW-Stout’s Kyle Mills; UW-Superior’s Matt Reijo; and UW-Whitewater’s Bryce Rudebeck. The team was chosen for individuals that displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season. It included one member from each school.
