--University of Wisconsin-La Crosse captured its 13th straight title following two days of competition at the 2014 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Men’s Indoor Track & Field Championship at UW-Whitewater’s Kachel Fieldhouse on March 1.

The Eagles solidified the 39th first-place finish in program history with 189 points to top the 131 points compiled by UW-Eau Claire.  UW-Oshkosh finished third with 109 points, UW-Whitewater fourth with 99, UW-Platteville fifth with 74.50, UW-Stout sixth with 44.50, UW-Stevens Point seventh with 29, UW-River Falls eighth with 16 and UW-Superior ninth with 10.

UW-La Crosse’s lone individual champion during the second day of events was John Cooper, who claimed the 35-pound weight throw title with a fling of 64-3 1/4.

UW-Eau Claire’s Thurgood Dennis earned his third straight titles in both the 60-meter dash and 200-meter dash.  His time of 6.75 in the 60-meter dash established a conference meet record and helped him become the first individual in WIAC archives to win the 60-meter/55-meter event three consecutive years.  Dennis’ time in the 200-meter dash was 21.77.

He was also a member of both winning relay teams, teaming with Cody Prince, Brent Mantzke and Jimmy Paske to post a time of 1:28.74 in the 4x200-meter relay.  Paske joined Dennis on the 4x400-meter relay foursome, along with Will LaJeunesse and Kevin Brooks to achieve a time of 3:19.40.

UW-Eau Claire’s Brandon Zarnoth set a conference meet record enroute to winning the heptathlon with 5,385 points.

UW-Oshkosh’s McKena Ramos was victorious in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:51.42, while John McCann claimed the high jump title with a height of 6-9 1/2.

UW-Stout’s Patrick Jenkins won the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:17.80 and Nick Lubinski captured the triple jump with a leap of 47-5.

UW-Platteville’s TJ Valley secured the 60-meter hurdles crown with a time of 8.11 to match a conference meet record.

UW-La Crosse’s Jacob Peterson was named the Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete.

An All-Sportsmanship Team was chosen for individuals that displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season.  It included one member from each school.  Named to the squad were:  UW-Eau Claire’s Jacob Dennis-Oehling; UW-La Crosse’s Bryan Klister; UW-Oshkosh’s Jonathan Jordan; UW-Platteville’s Patrick Kessnich; UW-River Falls’ Anthony Sumnicht; UW-Stevens Point’s Justin Hemshrot; UW-Stout’s David Nett; UW-Superior’s Tony Willette; and UW-Whitewater’s Nathan Smith.
