Blue Devils Secure Women’s Golf Crown

NEKOOSA, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Stout secured the 2014 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Women’s Golf Championship after three days of competition at Lake Arrowhead Golf Course. With the first-place finish, the Blue Devils earned an automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Championship that will be conducted May 12-15, 2015, in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.
The league crown for UW-Stout is the second in the last three years. The Blue Devils earned this year’s crown with 966 strokes to surpass the 1,000 strokes compiled by defending champion UW-Eau Claire. UW-Oshkosh placed third with 1,051 strokes, UW-Whitewater fourth with 1,054, UW-Platteville fifth with 1,071, UW-River Falls sixth with 1,105 and UW-Stevens Point seventh with 1,135.
UW-Eau Claire’s Kate Engler claimed medalist honors for the second straight year with a 54-hole total of 234 strokes. She is the third individual in WIAC history to win the title back-to-back seasons, joining former Blugolds Maggie Loney (2004-05) and Katie Maurer (2008-09). UW-Eau Claire has had an individual secure medalist honors at the league meet 12 times in the 19-year history of the event.
UW-Stout’s Brittany McNett-Emmerich and Mariah Chesley finished second in the 52-player field with 236 strokes. UW-Oshkosh’s McKenzie Paul was fourth with 243 strokes, while UW-Stout’s Allison Van Heuklom was fifth with 249. UW-Platteville’s Stephanie Baribeau and Megan Ramp tied for sixth with 250. A three-way tie for eighth with 252 strokes included UW-Eau Claire’s Emily Stone, UW-Stevens Point’s Tiffany Boak and UW-Whitewater’s Claudia Rhein. Baribeau shot a 71 on the final 18 holes to match a conference-meet record that was set in 2005 by UW-Eau Claire’s Maggie Loney.
UW-Stout head coach Howie Samb was selected the Coach of the Year for the fourth straight season, while UW-River Falls’ Gillian McDonald earned the Judy Kruckman Scholar-Athlete Award.
An All-Sportsmanship Team was chosen for individuals that displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season. It included one member from each school. Named to the squad were: UW-Eau Claire’s Mandi Salo; UW-Oshkosh’s Taylor Wenzel; UW-Platteville’s Katie Gregorich; UW-River Falls’ Mari Pechacek; UW-Stevens Point’s Maggie Martin; UW-Stout’s Mariah Chesley; and UW-Whitewater’s Vivian Shoemaker.
