Eagles Earn 23rd Straight Men’s Track & Field Title

LA CROSSE, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-La Crosse collected its 23rd straight Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Championship following two days of competition at Roger Harring Stadium at Veteran’s Memorial Field Sports Complex on May 4.
The Eagles won the 49th league crown in program history with 223 points. UW-Oshkosh finished second with 206 points, UW-Eau Claire and UW-Platteville tied for third with 110, UW-Whitewater fifth with 90, UW-Stevens Point and UW-Stout tied for sixth with 42, UW-River Falls eighth with 31 and UW-Superior ninth with four.
UW-La Crosse secured two individual titles during the second day of events. Sean Royer claimed the 800-meter run with a time of 1:52.05, while David Stilin was triumphant in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:14.47.
UW-Oshkosh produced five individual winners and one relay first-place finish on the second day of the meet. Nick Baatz secured the shot put for the second straight season with a heave of 59-1 1/4, while Corey Wilch was a repeat winner in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles with a time of 52.38.
Lewis Prior captured the discus for the second time in his career with a toss of 182-4. He also won the event at the 2011 championship.
Reid Zanoya won the 400-meter dash with a time of 48.24 and Donald Klitz claimed the high jump with a height of 6-9. Wilch and Zanoya were members of the triumphant 4x400-meter relay that posted a time of 3:15.40. They were joined by Mike Servais and Brian Beaudo.
UW-Whitewater’s Marcus Smith captured the triple jump for the second straight year with a leap of 51-7, and added a first-place finish in the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 14.61.
For the second straight season, UW-Eau Claire’s Thurgood Dennis was victorious in the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash with times of 10.43 and 20.96, respectively.
UW-Stevens Point’s Dan Sullivan successfully defended his title in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 3:53.19, while UW-Stout’s Zach Anderson was a repeat winner in the decathlon with 6,597 points.
The UW-Platteville foursome of Aaron Hrubes, Jordan Olp, Casey Goffinet and Caleb Mertens won the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 41.13.
UW-Eau Claire’s Jeremy Kieser received the Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete Award.
Named to the Larry Zirgibel All-Sportsmanship Team were: UW-Eau Claire’s Marty Richardson; UW-La Crosse’sIsaac Vazquez; UW-Oshkosh’s Jake Dickmann; UW-Platteville’s Jordan Olp; UW-River Falls’ Tucker Malecha; UW-Stevens Point’s Jon Trzebiatowski; UW-Stout’s Sean O'Brien; UW-Superior’s Ed Martin; and UW-Whitewater’s Pat Lockington. The team was chosen for individuals that displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season. It included one member from each school.
