Eagles Grab Advantage At Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Championship

LA CROSSE, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, the 22-time defending champion, holds the advantage following the first of two days of competition at the 2013 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Championship at Roger Harring Stadium at Veteran’s Memorial Field Sports Complex on May 3.
The Eagles totaled 65 points to surpass the second-place total of 54 points by UW-Oshkosh. UW-Platteville is third with 50 points, UW-Whitewater fourth with 35, UW-Eau Claire and UW-Stout are tied for fifth with 22, UW-River Falls seventh with 13 and UW-Stevens Point eighth with 12. UW-Superior is also competing in the annual meet.
UW-La Crosse won a pair of individual titles and one relay crown during the first day of events. Isaac Vazquez claimed the long jump for the second consecutive year with a leap of 25-2, while Rob Rohe earned the pole vault with a height of 16-1 3/4.
The Eagles’ 4x800-meter relay squad of David Stilin, Tom Linner, Jacob Peterson and Bruce Schmitz produced a first-place time of 7:42.27.
UW-Oshkosh’s Pete Dezler secured the hammer throw for the second straight season with a fling of 182-3 and John Dewitt was victorious in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 31:21.14.
UW-Platteville’s Mark Niemann successfully defended his title in the javelin with a toss of 193-3. He is the first individual to win back-to-back crowns in the event since UW-Stevens Point’s Larry Aschebrook in 1998-99.
UW-Whitewater’s Dawson Miller captured the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:07.25.
