Day One Recap

MENOMONIE, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-La Crosse secured its 11th consecutive Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) men’s indoor track and field championship at UW-Stout’s Sports and Fitness Center on Feb. 25.

The Eagles earned their league-best 37th title in program history after compiling 140 points during the two-day championship. UW-Whitewater took second with 108.50 points, UW-Eau Claire third with 108, UW-Oshkosh fourth with 98.50, UW-Platteville fifth with 78, UW-Stout sixth with 63, UW-Stevens Point seventh with 52, UW-River Falls eighth with 50 and UW-Superior ninth with four.

UW-La Crosse won a pair of individual titles during the second day of competition.  Isaac Vazquez established a conference meet record of 50-6 1/4 enroute to winning the triple jump.  Sean Royer was victorious in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:54.88.

UW-Eau Claire’s Thurgood Dennis was a double-winner with times of 6.90 in the 60-meter dash and 21.69 in the 200-meter dash.

UW-Stevens Point’s Dan Sullivan secured the one-mile run with a conference meet record time of 4:08.44, and Zach Mixdorf was triumphant in the high jump with a leap of 6-10 1/4.

UW-Stout’s Tim Nelson was victorious in the 3,000-meter run with a conference meet record time of 8:15.47, while teammate Daniel Drewek earned the heptahlon with 5,021 points.

UW-Platteville’s Ben Farrell claimed the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.01, while UW-Whitewater’s Mike Judd produced a first-place time of 8.13 in the 60-meter hurdles.  UW-Oshkosh’s Pete Delzer was victorious in the 35-pound weight throw with a fling of 67-2 1/4.

In the relay events, the UW-Whitewater quartet of Dylan Crafton, Nick Bee, Luke Wenham and Dave Kuczynski emerged with a first-place time of 1:28.67 in the 4x200-meter relay.  UW-Eau Claire’s Cody Prince, Marty Richardson, Nik Ihlang and Thurgood Dennis teamed to win the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:19.96.

UW-Stout’s Daniel Drewek received the Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete Award.

An All-Sportsmanship Team was chosen for individuals that displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season. It included one member from each school. Named to the squad were: UW-Eau Claire’s Tyler Genovese; UW-La Crosse’s Isaac Vazquez; UW-Oshkosh’s Tyler Morey; UW-Platteville’s Jacob Dailey; UW-River Falls’ Jesse Walters; UW-Stevens Point’s Nicholas Dax; UW-Stout’s Ethan Baumann; UW-Superior’s Matt Reijo; and UW-Whitewater’s Kevin Buntman.
