UW-La Crosse Leads Men’s Indoor Track and Field Championship

MENOMONIE, Wis.--Ten-time defending champion, University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, leads the 2012 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Men’s Indoor Track and Field Championship following the first of two days of competition at UW-Stout’s Sports and Fitness Center on Feb. 24.

The Eagles have compiled 66.50 points to exceed UW-Oshkosh’s second-place total of 27. UW-Stout is third with 25 points, UW-Eau Claire fourth with 24, UW-Whitewater fifth with 23, UW-Platteville sixth with 12.50, UW-River Falls seventh with 11, UW-Stevens Point eighth with five and UW-Superior ninth with one.

UW-La Crosse captured a pair of individual titles during the first day of events. Isaac Vazquez earned the long jump for the second straight year with a leap of 24-3 1/2. Andy Novak won the shot put for the second consecutive season with a heave of 59-10 1/4.

UW-Stout’s Daniel Drewek captured the pole vault for the second straight year, and third time in his career with a height of 16-10 3/4. He also won the event in 2009 and joins UW-Whitewater’s Tom Plummer (1978-80), UW-La Crosse’s Mike Schnur (1994-96) and UW-La Crosse’s Hans Schmidt (2001, 2003-04) as three-time pole vault winners.

UW-Eau Claire’s Tom Breitbach successfully defended his title in the 5,000-meter run with a conference meet record time of 14:32.96 to become the first repeat champion in the event since former Blugold Jason Finch in 1998-99.

The UW-River Falls quarter of Scott Jensen, Derrek Pedersen, Alex Zeien and Jared Brandenburg were victorious in the distance medley relay with a time of 10:12.02.
