UW-Stevens Point Claims 12th Consecutive Men’s Swimming and Diving Crown

BROWN DEER, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point claimed its 12th consecutive Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Men’s Swimming and Diving Championship following three days of competition at the Walter Schroeder Aquatic Center.
The Pointers own 15 championships in program history and secured this year’s first-place plaque with 945 points. UW-Eau Claire finished second with 639 points, UW-La Crosse third with 622 points, UW-Whitewater fourth with 596 points, UW-Oshkosh fifth with 301 points and UW-River Falls sixth with 163 points.
UW-Stevens Point earned two individual titles and one relay first-place finish during the third day of events. Sam Davy won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 45.47, while Luuk Dekkers was victorious in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 16:18.66.
Davy also contributed to the winning 400-yard freestyle relay squad that produced a time of 3:02.04. Matthew Olp, Joey Clapp and Ryan Farmer joined Davy on the quartet.
UW-Eau Claire’s Jonathan Poppele won the 200-yard backstroke for the second time in his career with a time of 1:51.72. He also won the event in 2008. The Blugolds’ Alex Card was victorious in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:05.74.
UW-Oshkosh’s Dalton Anderson captured the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:52.53, while the Titans’ Phil Devine established a meet record en route to winning the three-meter diving with a score of 578.90.
Davy was selected the Swimmer of the Meet by the league coaches, while Devine earned the Diver of the Meet honor for the third straight year. Blugold head coach Art Brandt was chosen the Coach of the Year.
UW-Stevens Point’s Matthew Olp received the Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete Award.
