Day One Recap

BROWN DEER, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point expanded its lead following the second of three days of competition at the 2011 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Men’s Swimming and Diving Championship that is being held at the Walter Schroeder Aquatic Center.

The eleven-time defending champion Pointers have compiled 636 points to top the second-place total of 418 points by UW-Eau Claire. UW-La Crosse is third with 401 points, UW-Whitewater fourth with 382 points, UW-Oshkosh fifth with 197 points and UW-River Falls sixth with 119 points.

UW-Stevens Point earned four individual events and both relay competitions during the second day of events. Sam Davy established a meet record time of 1:40.98 en route to winning the 200-yard freestyle, while Ryan Farmer claimed the 100-yard butterfly for the second straight year with a time of 49.22.

Joey Clapp won the 100-yard backstroke with a performance of 51.55 and Matthew Olp secured the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 56.62.

The Pointers’ 800-yard freestyle relay team included Davy, Farmer, Luuk Dekkers and Daniel Lynam and produced a winning time of 6:52.65. Farmer, Clapp, Olp and Matthew Teske teamed to win the 200-yard medley relay in 1:32.64.

UW-Oshkosh’s Phil Devine captured the one-meter diving crown for the third straight year with a meet record mark of 574.40. He is the fifth individual in WIAC history to earn three consecutive first-place medals in the event.

UW-Eau Claire’s Jonathan Poppele was victorious in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:03.73.
