USTFCCCA Announces Academic Awards

Madison, Wis.--The United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) has announced its academic awards for the 2007-08 academic year.

UW-La Crosse was named the 2008 NCAA Division III Men’s Indoor Scholar Team of the Year after capturing the indoor national championship and recording a 3.018 team grade point average.  Individually, UW-Whitewater’s Jon Schellin was recognized as the 2008 NCAA Division III Indoor Track Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Schellin, a senior from Columbus, Wis., is majoring in secondary education and carries a 3.713 grade point average.

Joining UW-La Crosse on the Team All-Academic list were UW-Oshkosh (3.095) and UW-Platteville (3.028).  A total of 56 NCAA Division III men’s programs were honored.

UW-La Crosse (3.370), UW-Eau Claire (3.280), UW-Oshkosh (3.207), UW-Platteville (3.125) and UW-Whitewater (3.110) were among the 92 women’s programs receiving recognition.

The selection of the All-Academic Indoor and Outdoor Scholar Teams of the Year award is based on a combination of academic and athletic achievements.  To be nominated, the team must carry a minimum 3.000 cumulative grade point average.

The USTFCCCA also announced the 2008 NCAA Division III All-Academic Track and Field Team.  A total of 232 female student-athletes representing 84 Division III colleges and universities made up the squad.  UW-La Crosse placed a division-leading 14 student-athletes on the list that included 32 WIAC individuals.

The men’s team consisted of 158 student-athletes, including 20 from the WIAC, representing 70 Division III institutions.

To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and met the NCAA Division III Indoor or Outdoor automatic or provisional qualifying standard in their respective event.

Four Secure Academic All-America Women’s Track & Field/Cross Country Recognition

Madison, Wis.--Four Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) individuals have been named to the 2008 CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Women’s Track & Field/Cross Country Team.

UW-Eau Claire’s Liz Faller and UW-Platteville’s Marcia Taddy were first team selections, while UW-La Crosse’s Caitlin Schetter and UW-River Falls’ Krista Hasselquist were second team picks.

This marks the first time since 2004 that the WIAC has had two individuals receive first team laurels.  UW-Oshkosh’s Elizabeth Woodworth and UW-Stout’s Laura Verdegan were recognized in 2004.

The team is comprised of all NCAA Division II, Division III and NAIA student-athletes throughout the country and is voted on by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), while being sponsored by ESPN The Magazine.  To be eligible for the team, a student-athlete must maintain at least a grade point average of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at her current institution and be nominated by her sports information director.

Faller, a senior from Marinette, Wis., claimed second team accolades a year ago and is the first individual in program history to claim Academic All-America honors in back-to-back seasons.  She is majoring in kinesiology and boasts a 3.98 grade point average.

Taddy, a senior from Two Rivers, Wis., is majoring in biology and ornamental horticulture and carries a 3.62 grade point average.   She is the first individual in program history to secure Academic All-America recognition.

A junior from Kiel, Wis., Schetter sustains a 3.68 grade point average and is majoring in communication studies.  UW-La Crosse has had at least one women’s track & field/cross country student-athlete claim Academic All-America honors in 10 of the last 12 years.

Hasselquist, a senior from Osceola, Wis., is the first individual in program history to secure Academic All-America status.  She is majoring in health and human performance and upholds a 3.71 grade point average.

Faller, Lutz, Schetter, Taddy and Hasselquist are eligible for the Academic All-America Team that will be announced June 25.

Hertz, a senior from Baraboo, Wis., boasts a 3.92 grade point average and is majoring in biochemistry, while Humbach, a sophomore from Madison, Wis. (Abundant Life H.S.), is majoring in biochemistry/molecular biology and carries a 3.95 grade point average.

Scott, a junior from Kiel, Wis., is majoring in biology/pre-physical therapy and maintains a 3.64 grade point average.

A junior from Pocatello, Idaho, Jordahl sustains a 3.49 grade point average while majoring in exercise science.

UW-River Falls Wins First-Ever NCAA Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championship

Oshkosh, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-River Falls won its first-ever NCAA Division III Women’s Outdoor Track and Field national championship following completion of the event held May 22-24 at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.  The meet was hosted by UW-Oshkosh.

The Falcons split the national crown with Illinois Wesleyan University after totaling 35 team points.  Wartburg College (Iowa) placed third with 34 points, Keene State College (N.H.) fourth with 29 points and Roanoke College (Va.) fifth with 27 points.

This marks the third straight season a team from the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference has claimed the national title.  UW-Oshkosh won back-to-back trophies in 2006 and 2007.

This year, UW-Oshkosh and UW-Platteville tied for seventh with 24 points, while UW-Eau Claire and UW-La Crosse tied for 18th with 16, UW-Whitewater tied for 23rd with 12, UW-Stout tied for 33rd with eight and UW-Stevens Point tied for 53rd with five.  A total of 83 teams earned points at the national competition.

UW-River Falls’ Becca Jordahl claimed the national crown in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 16:52.49 and placed third in the 10,000-meter run.   She is the third individual in school archives to claim a national title.  Jen Pontius was victorious in the discus in 1996 and Jill Crandall was first in the high jump a year ago.

UW-Platteville’s Marcia Taddy secured a pair of national titles, winning the 800-meter run with a time of 2:08.23 and the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:23.36.  She claimed the 1,500-meter event for the second straight season and won the 800-meter in 2005.

UW-Oshkosh’s Terri Schwamb finished first in the hammer throw for the second straight season with a fling of 191-1 to earn the program’s 26th individual title, while UW-Whitewater’s Dana Thompson finished first in the discus with a toss of 161-8 to become the second individual in program history to claim a national title.  The Warhawks’ Tabitha Fendrick secured the discus in 1999.

The top eight finishers in each event received All-America accolades from the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

Track and Field Athletes Capture Region Awards

Madison, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point’s Kyle Steiner and UW-La Crosse’s Caitlin Schetter have been named the 2008 NCAA Division III Midwest Region Outdoor Field Athletes of the Year by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.  In addition, UW-River Falls’ Brenda Thiel was named the region’s Women’s Assistant Coach of the Year.

Steiner, a senior from Grafton, Wis., secured the men’s award after winning the decathlon title at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) championship for the second straight year.

A junior from Kiel, Wis., Schetter claimed the women’s honor after winning the long jump and placing second in the triple jump at the WIAC championship.  She recently broke the school record in the long jump with a leap of 19-6 1/4 - a distance that ranks as the best in NCAA Division III this season.

Thiel’s throwers were outstanding this spring.  Vicki Cooper qualified for the NCAA championship in three events (shot put, discus and javelin), and three other Falcons will be joining Thiel at nationals.  Thiel is in her fourth season as a UW-River Falls assistant.

UW-Eau Claire’s Schneider Claims Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Coach of the Year Honor

Madison, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire head coach Chip Schneider has been named the 2008 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) women’s outdoor track and field coach of the year, based on a vote of the league coaches.

Schneider is in his second season in charge of the Blugold women’s program and led the squad to a second-place standing at the WIAC championship.   UW-Eau Claire had three individual champions at the conference meet.

UW-Oshkosh’s Schwamb and UW-Whitewater’s Rogers Named Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Scholar-Athletes

Madison, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh’s Terri Schwamb and UW-Whitewater’s Jennifer Rogers have been named 2008 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Judy Kruckman Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Co-Scholar-Athletes.

Schwamb, a senior from Little Chute, Wis., boasts a 3.97 grade point average and is majoring in math education with a minor in Spanish.  She was named to the 2007 CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Second Team and the NCAA Division III Women’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.  Schwamb has been recognized on UW-Oshkosh’s Dean’s List nine semesters and is a three-time member of the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll.

She is a two-time WIAC champion in the hammer throw and holds the league meet record in the event.  Schwamb won the national title in the hammer throw a year ago and claimed All-America status in the competition in 2005 with a fifth-place finish.

Schwamb is a member of the Wisconsin Educators Association the Wisconsin Math Council and has served as a tutor for the UW-Oshkosh Math Department.

A senior from Fort Atkinson, Wis., Rogers possesses a 3.89 grade point average and is majoring in finance.  She received her undergraduate degree in December, 2007 and is currently enrolled as a graduate student in the school of curriculum and instruction.  Rogers is also serving as a financial representative intern with Northwestern Mutual Financial Network.

She won the conference title in the 10,000-meter run at the 2007 championship and placed third in the event in 2006 and second in 2005.  Rogers was named her team’s Most Valuable Player in 2007 and also claimed UW-Whitewater’s Freshman of the Year and Sophomore of the Year accolades.

She is a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society, National Scholars Honor Society, Institute of Management Accountants, Finance Association and Beta Gamma Sigma.   Rogers has been involved with J-Hawk Triathlon, the UW-Whitewater Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and Campus Community Clean-Up.

The WIAC Scholar-Athlete Award is named after Judy Kruckman and sponsored by Hewlett-Packard.  Kruckman served as Assistant Commissioner for the WIAC from 1996-98.  Prior to this appointment, she functioned as Commissioner of the Wisconsin Women's Intercollegiate Athletic Conference from October, 1984 - September, 1996.

In order to be nominated for the scholar-athlete award, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.25 grade point average, be in their last year of competition, or on schedule to graduate this academic year, and have competed for a minimum of two years.

Eagles Win Second Straight Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Crown

Eau Claire, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-La Crosse won its second straight Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) women’s outdoor track and field crown at UW-Eau Claire’s Simpson Field on May 2-3.

The Eagles won the 24th conference championship in program history with 192 points to surpass the second-place total of 158.50 points by UW-Eau Claire.  UW-Oshkosh finished third with 140.5 points, followed by UW-River Falls in fourth with 118, UW-Stevens Point in fifth with 77, UW-Stout in sixth with 51, UW-Platteville in seventh with 50, UW-Whitewater in eighth with 46 and UW-Superior in ninth with 24.

UW-La Crosse won three individual titles and two relay crowns during the two-day competition.  Caitlin Schetter claimed the long jump with a leap of 19-2 ½, while Abby Lein secured the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:03.13 and AnnMarie Glejf totaled 4,225 points enroute to winning the heptathlon.

The Eagles captured the 4x100-meter relay and 4x400-meter relay events with times of 47.92 and 3:54.35, respectively.

UW-River Falls secured five individuals titles, including two by Becca Jordahl who won the 5,000-meter and 10,000-meter runs with times of 17:01.58 and 36:53.43, respectively.  She was named the Track Performer of the Meet.

Krista Hasselquist placed first in the discus with a throw of 154-6, while Vicki Cooper claimed the shot put with a heave of 44-11 3/4 and Becky Ponick captured the javelin with a distance of 113-1.  Cooper was named the Field Performer of the Meet.

UW-Stout had three individual champions led by Ashlea Peter who won the triple jump for the second straight year with a leap of 39-0 1/4.  Sam Mayer earned the high jump with a height of 5-3 1/4 and Pam Sellberg claimed the pole vault with a height of 12-0 1/2.

UW-Platteville’s Marcia Taddy secured the 800-meter and 1,500-meter run for the fourth consecutive season with times of 2:12.86 and 4:38.25, respectively.   The Pioneers claimed the 4x800-meter relay with a time of 9:06.06.

UW-Eau Claire’s Liz Kooistra won the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.11, while teammate, Liz Faller secured the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.59.

UW-Stevens Point’s Elizabeth Caine won the 100-meter dash for the second straight year with a time of 12.24, while UW-Oshkosh’s Terri Schwamb became a repeat winner in the hammer throw with a fling of 191-5.

UW-Whitewater’s Brooke Bell claimed the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.12.

Day One of WIAC Track and Field Championships In The Books

Eau Claire, Wis.--Despite a wet and rainy day, competition in day one of the 2008 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Outdoor Track and Field Championship has been completed at Simpson Field.

UW-Oshkosh leads the nine-team field with 67.50 while UW-La Crosse, which won last year’s crown, is currently in second with 67. Eau Claire has 50.50 for a third place spot, and River Falls holds fourth with 35 points. The rest of the institutions did not break 20 points.

Oshkosh’s Terri Schwamb took home the top spot in the hammer throw with a distance of 191-05, an NCAA Division III automatic qualifying throw. The throw also marked a facility record, but came up just short of her own conference record that she set last season. Rebecca Masephol, also of Oshkosh, threw to a second place finish in the event with a 173-08, also an NCAA Division III automatic qualifying mark. Superior’s Sheri Niemeyer took the third spot with a distance of 162-10.

In the pole vault, Stout’s Pam Sellberg and La Crosse’s Alicia Ellingstad took first and second, respectively, with heights of 12-0 ½. Eau Claire’s Hayley Suckow finished third with a height of 11-6 ½.

In the long jump, La Crosse dominated, taking home the top three spots. Caitlin Schetter won with a leap of 19-2 ½, an NCAA Division III automatic qualifying score and a facility record. Katie Fondow finished second with a distance of 17-10 ¾ while Krista Kopesky finished in third with a jump of 17-09.

Taking first in the javelin throw was River Falls’ Becky Ponick, throwing 113-01. La Crosse’s Amanda Bly came in second with a distance of 109-04, while Oshkosh’s Katie Kohn threw 107-09 for a third place finish.

In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Eau Claire’s Hannah Humbach brought home the championship with an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time of 11:03.16. Claudi Borlee, also a member of the Blugolds, finished in second with a time of 11:26.71. Superiors’ Katie Rosburg took third with a time of 11:31.78.

River Falls’ Becca Jordahl won the 10,000-meter run with a time of 36:53.43, an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time and facility record. Elly Prunty of Eau Claire took second with a 38:17.44 finish, while La Crosse’s Jenna Gerten finished third with a time of 38:21.37.

In the 4x800-meter relay, Platteville took the top spot with a time of 9:06.06, a facility record. Oshkosh finished in second with a time of 9:22.13, and Eau Claire took third with a time of 9:25.94.
