Three Named To Women's Track and Field/Cross Country Academic All-America Team

Madison, Wis.--Three Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) student-athletes have been named to the 2003 Verizon/CoSIDA Academic All-America Women's Track and Field/Cross Country Team. UW-La Crosse's Jocelyn Loe was named to the first team, while UW-Oshkosh's Elizabeth Woodworth and UW-Stevens Point's Jody Butkowski were second team selections.

Loe, a senior from Oshkosh, Wis. (West H.S.), earned academic all-america first team honors for the second straight seasons. She is majoring in chemistry with a minor in mathematics, while maintaining a 4.00 grade point average and she was named the 2003 WIAC Judy Kruckman Indoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete. Loe is one of eight individuals on this year's all-america squad to carry a 4.00 grade point average. She has earned 10 NCAA Division III All-America honors participating as a member of relays at UW-La Crosse and has also captured 17 All-WIAC First Team medals in her career.

Woodworth, a junior from Marinette, Wis., is majoring in medical technology and maintains a 3.59 grade point average. She is a six-time All-American, winning the 800-meter run national title in indoors and outdoors the past two seasons. Woodworth was named the WIAC Track Athlete of the Meet at the 2003 indoor league championship and 2002 outdoor conference meet.

Butkowski, a senior from Stevens Point, Wis. (SPASH), is majoring in english education and maintains a 3.88 grade point average. She was a Verizon Academic All-America Third Team choice last year and was named the 2003 Judy Kruckman Women's Outdoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete. Butkowski is a three-time All-American and won the league triple jump crown and participated on the winning 4x100-meter relay team at the 2003 outdoor meet.

The academic all-america team is comprised of all NCAA Division II, Division III and NAIA athletes from around the country. It is selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

UW-La Crosse's Jocelyn Loe, UW-Oshkosh's Elizabeth Woodworth and UW-Stevens Point's Jody Butkowski were named to the first team, while UW-La Crosse's Kristin Raether earned second team honors.

The team is comprised of all NCAA Division II, Division III and NAIA track and field/cross country athletes from Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and Minnesota and voted on by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Raether, a senior from Marathon, Wis., is majoring in psychology and carries a 3.62 grade point average. She has earned five NCAA Division III All-America honors (two outdoor, three indoor) and has 16 top-six finishes at the WIAC Championships to her credit.

UW-La Crosse Finishes Third, UW-Oshkosh Fifth At NCAA Division III Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championships

NCAA Track and FieldCanton, N.Y.--University of Wisconsin-La Crosse finished third and UW-Oshkosh fifth at the NCAA Division III Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 22-24 at Merrick-Pinkard Track and Field Complex at St. Lawrence University.

Wheaton (Mass.) won its third straight national title, compiling 72 team points. Lehman (N.Y.) finished second (52), followed by UW-La Crosse (34), Christopher Newport (Va.) (32) and UW-Oshkosh (31.5). UW-Stevens Point tied for 35th with seven points, UW-Eau Claire tied for 42nd with five points and UW-River Falls tied for 78th with one point.

The third-place finish for UW-La Crosse is their best performance since 1997 when they finished second, while UW-Oshkosh posted their best finish since 1998 when they placed third.

UW-Oshkosh had two individuals claim national titles. Elizabeth Woodworth won the 800-meter run for the second straight season with a national meet record time of 2:07.39.

Deena Heins won the hammer throw with a national meet record toss of 188-5.

UW-Stevens Point's Butkowski Named Women's Outdoor
Track and Field Scholar-Athlete

Madison, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point's Jody Butkowski was named the 2003 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Judy Kruckman Women's Outdoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete, it was announced recently by WIAC Commissioner Gary Karner.

Butkowski, a senior from Stevens Point, Wis. (SPASH), is majoring in english education and maintains a 3.88 grade point average. She was named to the Verizon Academic All-America Women's Track and Field/Cross Country Third Team in 2002 and has been recognized on UW-Stevens Point's Dean's List and Honor Roll, including two perfect 4.0 semesters. Butkowski is a three-time member of the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll and has received a number of academic scholarships at UW-Stevens Point.

Butkowski, a team captain in 2002, recently helped UW-Stevens Point to a second-place finish at the WIAC Championships by winning the triple jump, participating on the winning 4x100-meter relay team and finishing second in the 200-meter dash. She holds the school outdoor record in the triple jump and placed sixth in the event at the national outdoor meet last year to earn All-America honors.

Butkowski has worked as an administrative assistant in the UW-Stevens Point Admissions Office and served as a volunteer sports reporter for the student newspaper. She is a member WEAC and the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society.

Butkowski is the first Pointer to claim the league's women's outdoor track and field scholar-athlete award.

Also nominated for the scholar-athlete award were: UW-La Crosse's Jocelyn Loe, Katie Morschauser, Stephanie Oudenhoven and Kristin Raether, UW-Oshkosh's Kate Meinecke, UW-Platteville's Cassandra Carey, Rebecca Fedak and Lindsay Olson, UW-River Falls' Sarah Thull, UW-Stevens Point's Lindsey Fowler and UW-Stout's Heidi Bedsted, Sarah Jenne, Lacey Osuldsen and Lisa Sorvala.

The WIAC Scholar-Athlete Award is sponsored by Culver's. In order to be nominated for the scholar-athlete award, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.25 grade point average, be in their last year of competition, or on schedule to graduate this academic year, and have competed for a minimum of two years.

UW-La Crosse Wins Sixth Straight Women's Outdoor Track and Field Conference Championship

Stevens Point, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-La Crosse won its sixth straight Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) women's outdoor track and field championship at Colman Field on Saturday, May 3.

The Eagles totaled 192 points to win their eighth league title in 12 seasons. UW-Stevens Point had its highest finish since 1985, placing second with 189 points. It was the closest finish for the team title with records dating back to the 1985 meet. UW-Oshkosh finished third (162.50), followed by UW-Eau Claire (158), UW-River Falls (50.50), UW-Whitewater (47), UW-Platteville (45), UW-Stout (12) and UW-Superior (0).

UW-La Crosse captured five individual titles during the two-day league meet. Angela Klatt won the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash crowns with times of 12.09 and 24.84, respectively. It marked the second straight year she has won the 100-meter event and the third straight season she has claimed the title in the 200. Klatt was voted the league's Track Performer of the Meet for her efforts.

Tricia Clark contributed to the Eagles' efforts by winning the long jump crown with a distance of 18-9 1/4. It marked the second straight season and third time in her career that she has won the event at the league meet. Jocelyn Loe won the 400-meter dash for the second consecutive season with a time of 57.28, while Angela Hilgers won the pole vault with a conference record height of 12-0 3/4.

UW-La Crosse's Kelly Runkle, Shelli Gotto, Klatt and Loe won the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:55.79.

UW-Oshkosh also claimed five individual titles at the league championship. Elizabeth Woodworth won the 800-meter run and 1,500-meter run crowns for the second straight year with times of 2:14.29 and 4:40.29, respectively.

Deena Heins won the hammer throw with a conference record toss of 181-1 and the discus with a toss of 151-1. She was voted the league's Field Performer of the Meet for her efforts.

UW-Oshkosh's Kay Mikolajczak won the javelin with a throw of 117-5 and Julie Hoch won the heptathlon with 4,067 points.

UW-Stevens Point was the third school to win five individual titles at the meet. Teresa Stanley won the 5,000-meter run and 3,000-meter steeplechase titles with times of 18:29.01 and 11:19.69, respectively. Kara Vosters claimed the 10,000-meter run crown with a time of 38:31.71, while Amanda Nechuta won the shot put for the second straight year with a heave of 46-0 3/4 and Jody Butkowski claimed the triple jump title with an effort of 39-7 1/4.

The Pointers also won the 4x100-meter relay and 4x800-meter relay events with times of 48.63 and 9:30.52, respectively. Liz Goergen, Kim Klosno, Tara Schmitt and Butkowski teamed to win the 4x100 event, while Isabelle Delannay, Leah Herlache, Jenna Mitchler and Megan Craig claimed the 4x800 title.

UW-Eau Claire's Jennifer Stafslien won the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.73, while Breanna McMullen claimed the 400-meter hurdles title for the second straight year with a time of 1:02.52 and Jackie Bloemendaal took first in the high jump with a height of 5-3 3/4.

UW-Stevens Point head coach Len Hill was voted the league's Coach of the Year for the second time in his career. He also won the award in 2001.
