USTFCCCA Announces Academic Awards

Madison, Wis.--The United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) has announced its academic awards for the 2007-08 academic year.

UW-La Crosse was named the 2008 NCAA Division III Men’s Indoor Scholar Team of the Year after capturing the indoor national championship and recording a 3.018 team grade point average.  Individually, UW-Whitewater’s Jon Schellin was recognized as the 2008 NCAA Division III Indoor Track Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Schellin, a senior from Columbus, Wis., is majoring in secondary education and carries a 3.713 grade point average.

Joining UW-La Crosse on the Team All-Academic list were UW-Oshkosh (3.095) and UW-Platteville (3.028).  A total of 56 NCAA Division III men’s programs were honored.

UW-La Crosse (3.370), UW-Eau Claire (3.280), UW-Oshkosh (3.207), UW-Platteville (3.125) and UW-Whitewater (3.110) were among the 92 women’s programs receiving recognition.

The selection of the All-Academic Indoor and Outdoor Scholar Teams of the Year award is based on a combination of academic and athletic achievements.  To be nominated, the team must carry a minimum 3.000 cumulative grade point average.

The USTFCCCA also announced the 2008 NCAA Division III All-Academic Track and Field Team.  A total of 232 female student-athletes representing 84 Division III colleges and universities made up the squad.  UW-La Crosse placed a division-leading 14 student-athletes on the list that included 32 WIAC individuals.

The men’s team consisted of 158 student-athletes, including 20 from the WIAC, representing 70 Division III institutions.

To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and met the NCAA Division III Indoor or Outdoor automatic or provisional qualifying standard in their respective event.

Four Secure Academic All-America Women’s Track & Field/Cross Country Recognition

Madison, Wis.--Four Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) individuals have been named to the 2008 CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Women’s Track & Field/Cross Country Team.

UW-Eau Claire’s Liz Faller and UW-Platteville’s Marcia Taddy were first team selections, while UW-La Crosse’s Caitlin Schetter and UW-River Falls’ Krista Hasselquist were second team picks.

This marks the first time since 2004 that the WIAC has had two individuals receive first team laurels.  UW-Oshkosh’s Elizabeth Woodworth and UW-Stout’s Laura Verdegan were recognized in 2004.

The team is comprised of all NCAA Division II, Division III and NAIA student-athletes throughout the country and is voted on by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), while being sponsored by ESPN The Magazine.  To be eligible for the team, a student-athlete must maintain at least a grade point average of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at her current institution and be nominated by her sports information director.

Faller, a senior from Marinette, Wis., claimed second team accolades a year ago and is the first individual in program history to claim Academic All-America honors in back-to-back seasons.  She is majoring in kinesiology and boasts a 3.98 grade point average.

Taddy, a senior from Two Rivers, Wis., is majoring in biology and ornamental horticulture and carries a 3.62 grade point average.   She is the first individual in program history to secure Academic All-America recognition.

A junior from Kiel, Wis., Schetter sustains a 3.68 grade point average and is majoring in communication studies.  UW-La Crosse has had at least one women’s track & field/cross country student-athlete claim Academic All-America honors in 10 of the last 12 years.

Hasselquist, a senior from Osceola, Wis., is the first individual in program history to secure Academic All-America status.  She is majoring in health and human performance and upholds a 3.71 grade point average.

Nine Claim Academic All-District Women’s Track & Field/Cross Country Accolades

Madison, Wis.--Nine Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference individuals have been named to the 2008 CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Five College Division Women’s Track & Field/Cross Country Team.

UW-Eau Claire’s Liz Faller and Beth Lutz, UW-La Crosse’s Caitlin Schetter, UW-Platteville’s Marcia Taddy and UW-River Falls’ Krista Hasselquist were first team choices, while UW-Eau Claire’s Amber Hertz and Hannah Humbach, UW-Platteville’s Jessica Scott and UW-River Falls’ Becca Jordahl were second team honorees.

Faller, Lutz, Schetter, Taddy and Hasselquist are eligible for the Academic All-America Team that will be announced June 25.

Hertz, a senior from Baraboo, Wis., boasts a 3.92 grade point average and is majoring in biochemistry, while Humbach, a sophomore from Madison, Wis. (Abundant Life H.S.), is majoring in biochemistry/molecular biology and carries a 3.95 grade point average.

Scott, a junior from Kiel, Wis., is majoring in biology/pre-physical therapy and maintains a 3.64 grade point average.

A junior from Pocatello, Idaho, Jordahl sustains a 3.49 grade point average while majoring in exercise science.

UW-La Crosse and UW-River Falls Lead WIAC at NCAA Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championship

Ada, Ohio--University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and UW-River Falls led a contingent of seven Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference teams that earned points at the NCAA Division III Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championship that was held March 14-15 at the Ohio Northern Sports Center on the campus of Ohio Northern University.

Illinois Wesleyan captured the national title with 30 team points to nip the second-place total of 27 points by Wartburg College (Iowa).  Washington University (Mo.) took third with 23 points, while UW-La Crosse and Keene State (N.H.) tied for fourth with 21 points.

UW-River Falls tied for ninth with 15 points, UW-Eau Claire 11th with 13 points, UW-Oshkosh 12th with 12 points, UW-Platteville tied for 15th with 10 points, UW-Stout tied for 46th with four points and UW-Stevens Point tied for 51st with three points.   A total of 67 teams earned points at the national meet.

UW-La Crosse’s Caitlin Schetter claimed the long jump with a leap of 19-2 3/4, while UW-Platteville’s Jessica Scott won the 800-meter run with a time of 2:11.84

The top eight finishers in each event claimed All-America status from the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

Three Secure USTFCCCA Awards

Madison, Wis.--Three Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) individuals have been cited by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) for their efforts during the 2008 season.

UW-La Crosse’s Caitlin Schetter was named the 2008 NCAA Division III Women’s Field Athlete of the Year, while UW-Platteville’s Marcia Taddy secured the Midwest Region Women’s Track Athlete of the Year award and UW-Oshkosh’s Willy Kaul claimed the Midwest Region Men’s Track Athlete of the Year honor.

Schetter, a junior from Kiel, Wis., captured the WIAC championship in the triple jump and placed second in the long jump.   She boasts the top long jump performance in the country with a mark of 19-3 1/2.

Taddy, a senior from Two Rivers, Wis., earned the regional honor for the second straight season and was named the national track athlete of the year in 2007.  She won both the 800 and one-mile runs at the WIAC championship for the third consecutive year.   Taddy established a WIAC meet-record and top time in the country in the 800-meter run with a performance of 2:10.35 and holds the top time in the nation in the one-mile run at 4:53.07.

Kaul, a junior from Menomonee Falls, Wis. (Milwaukee Lutheran H.S.) won both the 3,000 and 5,000-meter runs at the WIAC meet this season and holds the top time in the NCAA Division III with a performance of 14:22.99 in the 5,000-meter run.

UW-River Falls’ Hasselquist Named Women’s Indoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete

Madison, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-River Falls’ Krista Hasselquist has been named the 2008 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Judy Kruckman Women’s Indoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete.

Hasselquist, a senior from Osceola, Wis., carries a 3.72 grade point average and is majoring in health and human performance with an emphasis in exercise and sport science and a minor in business administration.  She is a three-time member of the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll and is a seven-time honoree on UW-River Falls’ Dean’s List.  Hasselquist has been the recipient of numerous academic scholarships from her institution.

A two-year team captain, she claimed All-America honors in the shot put with a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Division III championship a year ago when she placed second in the shot put and 20-pound weight throw at the WIAC championship.  Hasselquist is a four-time championship participant and has earned her team’s MVP award and “Hardcore” award.  She is also the school record holder in the shot put and 20-pound weight throw.

Hasselquist is a member of UW-River Falls’ Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Leadership Development and Service Committee, Facilities and Fees Committee, Budget Committee, Recreation Committee and Student Senate.  In addition, she has served as an equipment manager for the Falcon football team the last three seasons.

The WIAC Scholar-Athlete Award is named after Judy Kruckman and sponsored by Hewlett-Packard.  Kruckman served as Assistant Commissioner for the WIAC from 1996-98.  Prior to this appointment, she functioned as Commissioner of the Wisconsin Women's Intercollegiate Athletic Conference from October, 1984 - September, 1996.

In order to be nominated for the scholar-athlete award, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.25 grade point average, be in their last year of competition, or on schedule to graduate this academic year, and have competed for a minimum of two years.

UW-Eau Claire’s Schneider Named Women’s Indoor Track and Field Coach of the Year

Madison, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire head coach Chip Schneider has been named the 2008 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) women’s indoor track and field coach of the year, based on a vote of the league coaches.

Schneider is in his second season with the Blugolds and guided the squad to a second-place finish at this year’s WIAC championship.   The second-place standing is the highest in program history and was also accomplished by the 1981 and 1984 squads.

UW-La Crosse Earns Second Consecutive Women’s Indoor Track and Field Title

Superior, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-La Crosse earned its second consecutive Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Women’s Indoor Track and Field title on March 1 in UW-Superior’s Lydia Thering Fieldhouse.

The Eagles claimed the 18th championship in program history after winning three events during the second day of competition and finishing the two-day event with 192.33 team points.  

UW-Eau Claire placed second with 137.83 points, UW-Oshkosh third with 115.50, UW-River Falls fourth with 74, UW-Stevens Point fifth with 51, UW-Platteville sixth with 46.50, UW-Whitewater seventh with 37.50, UW-Stout eighth with 35.33 and UW-Superior ninth with 12.

UW-La Crosse’s Caitlin Schetter won the triple jump with a leap of 37-2 1/2, while AnnMarie Glejf earned the pentathlon with 3,241 points.

The Eagles’ 4x200-meter relay team placed first with a time of 1:44.27.

UW-Platteville’s Marcia Taddy claimed the 800-meter run and one-mile run for the third consecutive year with times of 2:10.35 and 4:53.07, respectively.  Her time in the 800-meter run established a conference record.

UW-Whitewater’s Brooke Bell was also a double-winner after finishing first in the 55-meter dash and 200-meter dash.  She won the 55-meter event with a time of 7.28 and the 200-meter competition with a time of 25.63.

UW-River Falls’ Becca Jordahl earned her second first-place medal in as many days after placing first in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 9:56.46.  She won the 5,000-meter run during Friday’s festivities.

The Falcons’ Jessica Reed won the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.64.

UW-Eau Claire’s Liz Kooistra secured the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.80, while Amy Morse claimed the 20-pound weight throw with a fling of 54-5 1/4.

The Blugolds claimed the 4x400-meter relay with a performance of 3:57.89.

Eagles Hold Early Advantage at Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championship

Superior, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-La Crosse holds the advantage following the first day of competition at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championship in UW-Superior’s Lydia Thering Fieldhouse.

The defending champion Eagles registered 75.33 team points in six events to better UW-River Falls’ second-place total of 39 points.  UW-Oshkosh is third with 37.50, UW-Eau Claire fourth with 32.83, UW-Stout fifth with 23.33, UW-Stevens Point sixth with 12, UW-Whitewater seventh with 8.50, UW-Superior eighth with three and UW-Platteville ninth with 2.5.

UW-La Crosse’s Katie Fondow claimed the long jump for the second consecutive year with a leap of 18-8 1/2.

UW-River Falls and UW-Stout each had a pair of winners.   The Falcons’ Vicki Cooper claimed the shot put with a heave of 46-6 1/4, while Becca Jordahl placed first in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 17:12.88.

The Blue Devils’ Sam Mayer out-jumped the field in the high jump with a performance of 5-5 3/4 and Pam Sellberg was victorious in the pole vault with a height of 12-6.

UW-Oshkosh’s distance medley relay team earned a first-place standing with a time of 12:12.17.

Competition continues with the final day of events on March 1 beginning at 9 a.m.
