Three Named To Women's Track and Field/Cross Country Academic All-America Team

Madison, Wis.--Three Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) student-athletes have been named to the 2003 Verizon/CoSIDA Academic All-America Women's Track and Field/Cross Country Team. UW-La Crosse's Jocelyn Loe was named to the first team, while UW-Oshkosh's Elizabeth Woodworth and UW-Stevens Point's Jody Butkowski were second team selections.

Loe, a senior from Oshkosh, Wis. (West H.S.), earned academic all-america first team honors for the second straight seasons. She is majoring in chemistry with a minor in mathematics, while maintaining a 4.00 grade point average and she was named the 2003 WIAC Judy Kruckman Indoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete. Loe is one of eight individuals on this year's all-america squad to carry a 4.00 grade point average. She has earned 10 NCAA Division III All-America honors participating as a member of relays at UW-La Crosse and has also captured 17 All-WIAC First Team medals in her career.

Woodworth, a junior from Marinette, Wis., is majoring in medical technology and maintains a 3.59 grade point average. She is a six-time All-American, winning the 800-meter run national title in indoors and outdoors the past two seasons. Woodworth was named the WIAC Track Athlete of the Meet at the 2003 indoor league championship and 2002 outdoor conference meet.

Butkowski, a senior from Stevens Point, Wis. (SPASH), is majoring in english education and maintains a 3.88 grade point average. She was a Verizon Academic All-America Third Team choice last year and was named the 2003 Judy Kruckman Women's Outdoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete. Butkowski is a three-time All-American and won the league triple jump crown and participated on the winning 4x100-meter relay team at the 2003 outdoor meet.

The academic all-america team is comprised of all NCAA Division II, Division III and NAIA athletes from around the country. It is selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

UW-La Crosse's Jocelyn Loe, UW-Oshkosh's Elizabeth Woodworth and UW-Stevens Point's Jody Butkowski were named to the first team, while UW-La Crosse's Kristin Raether earned second team honors.

The team is comprised of all NCAA Division II, Division III and NAIA track and field/cross country athletes from Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and Minnesota and voted on by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Raether, a senior from Marathon, Wis., is majoring in psychology and carries a 3.62 grade point average. She has earned five NCAA Division III All-America honors (two outdoor, three indoor) and has 16 top-six finishes at the WIAC Championships to her credit.

Indoor Track & Field Teams End Season On Top of National Power Rankings

The UW-Stevens Point men's indoor track and field team finished the 2003 season as the nation's top-ranked team in the NCAA Division III power rankings.

The rankings, compiled by M&F Athletic Company, measure a team's overall depth through a different scoring process than a national meet. Rather than determining the national champion based on the number of qualifiers and top performers at the national meet, the rankings examine a team's overall quality throughout the lineup based on performances throughout the season.

UW-Stevens Point won the title with a power ranking of 154.07, edging UW-La Crosse by eight-hundredths of a point. UW-Oshkosh was third in the rankings, giving the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference the top three teams. The Pointers were recognized at last weekend's national meet in Greencastle, Ind. for their accomplishment.

On the women's side, Williams (Mass.) was No. 1, UW-La Crosse was No. 2 and UW-Stevens point was No. 3. The WIAC had four of the top six teams with UW-Oshkosh fifth and UW-Eau Claire sixth.

UW-Oshkosh Fourth, UW-La Crosse Fifth At NCAA Division III Women's Indoor Track & Field Championships

NCAA Track and FieldGreencastle, Ind.--University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh finished fourth and UW-La Crosse fifth at the NCAA Division III Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships on March 14-15 at the DePauw University (Ind.) Indoor Tennis and Track Center.

The Titans totaled 41 team points for their highest total since the 1996 season, while UW-La Crosse compiled 24 points. The Eagles posted a top-five finish for the ninth time in school history. UW-Stevens Point tied for 20th with eight points, UW-Stout finished 23rd with seven points and UW-Eau Claire tied for 50th with one point.

Wheaton (Mass.) won its fifth straight indoor championship with 54 points. Lehman (N.Y.) was second with 48 points, while Williams (Mass.) finished third with 42.

UW-Oshkosh was led by Elizabeth Woodworth and Deena Heins who each won individual titles. Woodworth won the 800-meter run for the second straight season with a Division III season-best time of 2:11.59. Heins captured the 20-pound weight throw with a toss of 60-3 1/4.

UW-La Crosse's Loe Named Women's Indoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete

Madison, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-La Crosse's Jocelyn Loe has been named the 2003 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Judy Kruckman Women's Indoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete, it was announced recently by WIAC Commissioner Gary Karner.

Loe, a senior from Oshkosh, Wis., is majoring in chemistry with a minor in mathematics and carries a 4.00 grade point average. She was named to 2002 Verizon/CoSIDA Academic All-America Women's Cross Country/Track and Field First Team and is a three-time United States Track Coaches Association All-Academic selection. Loe has been recognized on the UW-La Crosse Dean's List and is a three-time member of the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll. She has received numerous scholarships while attending UW-La Crosse, including an undergraduate research fellowship.

Loe, a team captain, recently helped the Eagles to their fourth consecutive league championship as a member of the winning 4 x 200 and 4 x 400-meter relay teams to increase her career conference championship total to eight. She is also a three-time All-American as a member of the 4 x 400-meter relay teams the past three years.

Loe is a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society as is a participant and volunteer in numerous campus ministry and faith-based community service projects.

Loe becomes the third Eagle to win the league's women's indoor track and field scholar-athlete award, joining Ellen Findlay (2002) and Patti Franckowiak (1999).

Also nominated for the scholar-athlete award were: UW-Eau Claire's Rebecca Brandner, UW-La Crosse's Stephanie Oudenhoven, Katie Morschauser and Kristin Raether, UW-Oshkosh's Kate Meinecke, UW-Platteville's Cassandra Carey, Rebecca Fedak and Julie Korish, UW-River Falls' Sarah Thull and Lisa Traxler and UW-Stout's Sarah Jenne and Lisa Sorvala.

The WIAC Scholar-Athlete Award is sponsored by Culver's. In order to be nominated for the scholar-athlete award, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.25 grade point average, be in their last year of competition, or on schedule to graduate this academic year, and have competed for a minimum of two years.

UW-La Crosse Claims Fourth Straight Women's Indoor Track & Field Title

WIAC Championship TrophyOshkosh, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-La Crosse claimed its fourth straight Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) women's indoor track and field championship at Kolf Sports Center on Saturday, March 8.

The Eagles, who have won five of the last 10 league crowns, totaled 204 team points to win this year's crown. UW-Oshkosh finished second with 145.50 points, followed by UW-Stevens Point (108), UW-Eau Claire (103.50), UW-Platteville (40), UW-Stout (33.50), UW-River Falls (31), UW-Whitewater (29.50) and UW-Superior (7).

UW-La Crosse captured six individual titles during the two-day meet. Angela Klatt won the 55-meter dash and 200-meter dash titles with times of 7.27 and 25.60, respectively. It marked the third straight year she has won the 200 meter crown.

Julia Rudd won the 5,000-meter run with a time of 17:53.76, while Tricia Clark won the long jump with a distance of 18-9 3/4 and Angela Hilgers won the pole vault title with a height of 12-4. Kristin Raether claimed the shot put crown with toss of 45-2 1/4.

UW-Oshkosh's Elizabeth Woodworth was voted the Outstanding Track Performer of the Meet after wining the 800-meter run and the 1,500-meter run titles. She claimed the 800 meter event for the third straight season with a time of 2:18.11 and the 1,500 meter crown with a time of 4:41.21.

UW-Oshkosh also got individual titles from Deena Heins and Julie Hoch. Heins won the 20-pound weight throw with a conference record heave of 59-7 1/2, while Hoch won the pentathlon title with 3,151 points.

UW-Eau Claire's Breanna McMullen won the 55-meter hurdles title for the second straight year with a time of 8.40, while Jackie Bloemendaal added another individual crown for the Blugolds, winning the high jump with a height of 5-5.

UW-Stevens Point's Megan Craig won the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:18.29 and Jesalyn Maher claimed the 400-meter dash title with a time of 58.33.

UW-Stout's Laura Verdegan was voted the Outstanding Field Performer of the Meet after establishing a new conference mark in the triple jump with a distance of 40-4.

UW-La Crosse's 4 x 200 meter relay team of Kelly Runkle, Shelli Gotto, Jocelyn Loe and Klatt won with a time of 1:42.02, while the Eagles' 4 x 400 meter relay team of Paige Brown, Runkle, Loe and Klatt won with a time of 4:00.95.

UW-Oshkosh's distance medley relay squad of Jackie Munoz, Lyn Mikolajczak, Katie Isermann and Woodworth took first with a time of 12:16.07.

UW-La Crosse head coach Pat Healy was voted the league's Coach of the Year for the fourth straight season in the indoor competition.
