Second Year Of “Dig for the Cure” Successful

Dig for the CureMADISON, Wis.--In its second year conducting the event, women’s volleyball teams from the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) raised $16,404 through the “Dig for the Cure” program for Susan G. Komen Foundations located in Madison, Wis., Milwaukee, Wis., and Wausau, Wis.  This season’s total brings the conference’s two-year sum to $33,751.

The nine conference teams raised money using various promotional activities to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research.  Spectators at the designated matches were encouraged to wear pink in support of all those affected by breast cancer.

The following WIAC matches during the 2009 season featured the “Dig for the Cure” promotion: UW-Stevens Point at UW-River Falls (Oct. 3), UW-Platteville at UW-Whitewater (Oct. 6), UW-River Falls at UW-Eau Claire (Oct. 7), UW-Oshkosh at UW-La Crosse (Oct. 7), UW-Stout at UW-Superior (Oct. 7), UW-Eau Claire at UW-Stout (Oct. 14), UW-La Crosse at UW-Platteville (Oct. 14), UW-Whitewater at UW-Stevens Point (Oct. 14) and UW-Platteville at UW-Oshkosh (Oct. 21).

“Dig for the Cure” was started in 2003 by University of North Carolina-Charlotte volleyball coach Lisa Marston as a way to raise money for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation, a national organization that raises money for breast cancer research.

Since its inception, “Dig for the Cure” has become a nationwide event, with college conferences throughout the country raising money for their local Susan G. Komen affiliate.
