UW-La Crosse Falls to Carthage in Second Round of NCAA III Tournament

St. Peter, Minn. --The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women’s tennis team fell 5-1 to Carthage College (Wis.) in the second round of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Tournament Saturday afternoon at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota.

The Eagles finish their season 19-6 in duals while the Lady Reds improve to 20-5 and will play Gustavus Adolphus in the NCAA III Third Round Sunday, May 6.

Carthage opened the dual winning all three doubles matches. Amanda Sta. Romana/Elizca Buys defeated Angie Riedel/Julie Tellefsen 8-4 at No. 1 doubles; Kristin Minkowski/Gina Klein defeated Erin Fekete/Carlie Bohrmann 8-4 at No. 2 doubles and Beth Kaufman/Taylor Gustafson defeated Sarah Schoenwaelder/Courtney Tornow 8-6 at No. 3 doubles.

Buys defeated Tellefsen 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles to give Carthage a 4-0 lead before Schoenwaelder earned a 6-4, 6-1 win over Gustafson at No. 5 singles for UW-L to cut the lead to 4-1. Sta. Romana then earned a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Riedel at No. 1 singles for Carthage to earn the dual victory. The other three matches were not finished as the dual was played to decision.

UW-La Crosse was making its second appearance in school history in the national tournament. The Eagles earned a 5-0 victory over Grinnell College (Iowa) in Friday's first round. UW-L also made the NCAA III Tournament in 2001, defeating DePauw University (Ind.) 5-4 in the first round before losing 8-1 to Gustavus Adolphus in the second round.

UW-La Crosse Advances to Second Round of NCAA III Tournament

St. Peter, Minn. --The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women’s tennis team advanced to the second round of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Tournament Friday afternoon with a 5-0 victory over Grinnell College (Iowa) in the opening round. The match was played at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota.

The Eagles improve to 19-5 in duals this season and will face Carthage College (Wis.) in the second round Saturday, May 5 at 11:30 a.m. in St. Peter. Carthage defeated UW-L, 8-1, March 13 in Orlando, Florida. Grinnell finished its season at 11-8.

UW-L won all three doubles matches to open the dual Friday. Angie Riedel/Julie Tellefsen defeated Maya Lipert/Katie Colver 8-1 at No. 1 doubles; Erin Fekete/Carlie Bohrmann defeated Camila Alarcon/Jill Akiyama 8-4 at No. 2 doubles and Sarah Schoenwaelder/Courtney Tornow beat Lindsay Smith/Kelsey Picken 8-2 at No. 3.

In singles play, Schoenwaelder defeated Smith, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 5. Tornow beat Picken, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 6 singles for UW-L. The match was played to decision.

UW-La Crosse to Face Grinnell in NCAA Women’s Tennis Tournament

Madison, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-La Crosse’s women’s tennis team will face Grinnell College (Iowa) in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament. The Eagles and Pioneers will meet at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota Friday, May 4 in the regional tournament. Times have not been announced.

UW-La Crosse earned an automatic bid into the 48-team national tournament field by winning the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship in October, 2006.

It is the second appearance in the national tournament for UW-La Crosse after competing in 2001. The Eagles defeated DePauw University (Ind.), 5-4, in the first round of the 2001 tournament before losing, 8-1, to Gustavus Adolphus in the second round.

The Eagles are 18-5 in duals this season while Grinnell is 11-7.  The Eagles defeated the Pioneers, 9-0, April 28 in Decorah, Iowa.

The winner of the UW-La Crosse/Grinnell match will face Carthage College (Wis.) in the second round Saturday, May 5 in St. Peter.  Carthage defeated UW-La Crosse, 8-1, March 13 in Orlando, Florida.

In the other first round regional match-up, Coe College (Iowa) faces College of St. Scholastica (Minn.) May 4. The winner will play Gustavus Adolphus May 5.  The second round winners will then meet Sunday, May 6. The NCAA III Quarterfinals are scheduled for Tuesday, May 15 in Fredricksburg, Virginia.

UW-La Crosse’s Riedel Named Women’s Tennis Scholar-Athlete

Madison, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-La Crosse’s Angie Riedel has been named the 2006 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Judy Kruckman Women’s Tennis Scholar-Athlete.

Riedel, a senior from Wauwatosa, Wis. (East H.S.), is majoring in communications with a minor in German and carries a 3.51 grade point average.  She is a three-time member of the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll and has been recognized on UW-La Crosse’s Dean’s List four semesters. 

Riedel, a two-time team captain, helped UW-La Crosse to their second straight WIAC championship after winning the No. 1 singles crown for the third consecutive season and the No. 1 doubles title for the second straight year.  She has been named her team’s Most Valuable Player the last three seasons and has been ranked in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Central Region singles and doubles rankings.

Riedel is a member of the Delta Phi Alpha and Lambda Pi Eta National Honor Societies, while also being active in UW-La Crosse’s Winner’s Council.  She has served as volunteer for New Horizons (battered women’s and children’s shelter) and the Active and Healthy Lifestyles for Children and Youth with Disabilities organization.

Riedel becomes the sixth UW-La Crosse student-athlete to claim the conference’s women's tennis scholar-athlete award, joining Andrea Deacon (1995), Lisa Ziemer (1993), Amy Scheidt (1992), Jeanne Seichter (1986) and Elizabeth Turk (1982).

Also nominated for this year’s scholar-athlete award were:  UW-Eau Claire’s Laura Geissler, UW-La Crosse’s Jenny Sponholtz and Julie Tellefsen, UW-Stout’s Jenna Bettmann and UW-Whitewater’s Kara Theis.

The WIAC Scholar-Athlete Award is named after Judy Kruckman, who served as Assistant Commissioner for the WIAC from 1996-98. Prior to this appointment, she functioned as Commissioner of the Wisconsin Women's Intercollegiate Athletic Conference from October, 1984 - September, 1996.

In order to be nominated for the scholar-athlete award, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.25 grade point average, be in their last year of competition, or on schedule to graduate this academic year, and have competed for a minimum of two years.

UW-Eau Claire’s Monson Named Women’s Tennis Coach of the Year

Madison, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire’s Craig Monson was named the 2006 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Women’s Tennis Coach of the Year, which was determined by a vote among the league coaches.

Monson is in his third season with the Blugolds and directed the squad to a second-place finish at the conference championship – their best finish since 2003 when also placed second.   UW-Eau Claire compiled a 10-1 dual meet record during this fall, including a 5-1 mark in the WIAC with the lone loss to league champion UW-La Crosse.

UW-La Crosse Wins Second Straight Women’s Tennis Championship

Madison, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-La Crosse won its second straight Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) women’s tennis championship following conclusion of the two-day league tournament at Nielsen Tennis Stadium on Oct. 22. 

The conference championship for the Eagles is also the third in the last four seasons and the 15th in school history.  By winning the league crown, UW-La Crosse earned the conference’s automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Tournament which will be conducted in May, 2007.

The 2006 WIAC women’s tennis championship was determined by using a combination of the regular season dual meet standings and the conference tournament results.  The finish in the regular season conference standings accounted for one-third of the criteria, while the WIAC Tournament accounted for the remaining two-thirds.

UW-Eau Claire finished second in the final championship standings with 18 points, followed by UW-Whitewater (15 points), UW-River Falls (11 points), UW-Stout (10 points), UW-Oshkosh (5 points) and UW-Stevens Point (4 points).

UW-La Crosse claimed five singles titles and one doubles crown enroute to this year’s title.   Angie Riedel won the No. 1 singles championship for the third straight season with a 6-4, 6-2 decision over UW-Whitewater’s Nicole Stamm.  It marked the second straight year the two have battled in the league championship match at No. 1.

The Eagles’ Rachel Benn won the No. 2 singles title with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over UW-Eau Claire’s Gina Dahl, while Julie Tellefsen secured the No. 3 singles crown with a 6-1, 6-3 triumph over UW-Whitewater’s Kara Theis.

Erin Fekete captured the No. 4 singles crown for the second straight season with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over UW-Eau Claire’s Laura Geissler, while Carlie Bohrman won the No. 5 singles title with a 6-1, 6-3 decision over UW-Whitewater’s Jenny Woyahn. 

UW-La Crosse’s No. 1 doubles team of Riedel and Tellefsen was victorious in the championship match with an 8-5 win over UW-Eau Claire’s Geissler and Sarah Riordan.  Riedel also won the No. 1 doubles title a year ago.

UW-Eau Claire’s Brenna McCormick claimed the No. 6 singles crown with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 triumph over UW-Stout’s Katie Carr.

The Blugolds also captured a pair of doubles crowns at the league tournament.  The No. 2 doubles squad of McCormick and Kristie Carlson claimed an 8-2 win over UW-River Falls’ Katie Anderson and Mindy Rudiger.

UW-Eau Claire’s No. 3 doubles team of Dahl and Liz Deprey defeated UW-Whitewater’s Brittany Gering and Katherine Smith in the title match 8-6.

UW-Eau Claire head coach Craig Monson was named the 2006 Coach of the Year, while UW-La Crosse’s Angie Riedel received the Judy Kruckman Scholar-Athlete Award.
