University of Wisconsin-Whitewater will aim for a second straight Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Women's Tennis Championship as part of the two-day league tournament at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison on October 22-23.
The 2005 WIAC women's tennis championship will be determined by using a combination of the regular season dual meet standings and the conference tournament results. The finish in the regular season conference standings accounts for one-third of the criteria, while the WIAC Tournament accounts for the remaining two-thirds.
Dual meet standings for the 2005 regular season included: UW-La Crosse (6-0) (7 points), UW-Whitewater (5-1) (6 points), UW-Eau Claire (4-2) (5 points), UW-River Falls (3-3) (4 points), UW-Stout (2-4) (3 points), UW-Oshkosh (1-5) (2 points) and UW-Stevens Point (0-6) (1 point).
UW-Whitewater enters the league tournament holding three top seeds in singles competition. Jessie Farrar is the top seed at No. 2 singles after cruising to a 6-0 record in conference dual meets this season.
The Warhawks also claimed top seeds at No. 3 singles and No. 6 singles. Kara Theis finished 6-0 at No. 3 singles to secure the top spot, while Tiffany Dawson claimed the top seed at No. 6 singles. Theis captured the No. 5 singles title a year ago and was a member of the No. 2 doubles championship duo.
UW-Whitewater will receive stiff competition for the conference title from UW-La Crosse. The Eagles captured the league crown in 2003 to snap UW-Eau Claire's string of 10 consecutive titles. UW-La Crosse owns the top seed in three singles events and all three doubles flights.
Angie Riedel claimed the No. 1 singles crown last year and enters this year's tournament as the top seed after accumulating a 6-0 record in conference dual meets.
The top seed at No. 4 singles belongs to Erin Fekete, while Louie Dubinski holds the top spot at No. 5 singles. Fekete and Dubinski both collected 6-0 records in league dual meets.
UW-La Crosse's Erica Schmelzer and Riedel earned the top seed at No. 1 doubles this year after registering a 6-0 dual meet mark. The duo finished second in the flight at the conference tournament last season.
The top spot at No. 2 doubles belongs to the Eagles' Julie Tellefsen and Dubinski, who accumulated a 6-0 record in dual meets. They placed second in the flight at the league meet a year ago.
Debbie Braun and Fekete claimed the top seed at No. 3 doubles after amassing a 6-0 mark in conference dual meets. Fekete was a member of the No. 3 doubles championship duo in 2004.
