UW-La Crosse Claims Women's Tennis
Championship
Madison, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-La Crosse claimed the 2005 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Women's Tennis Championship following completion of the two-day league tournament at Nielsen Tennis Stadium on October 22-23.
The conference title for the Eagles is the 14th in school history (2005, 2003, 1992, 1991, 1989, 1981, 1979, 1978, 1977, 1976, 1975, 1974, 1973, 1972). The 14 league championships are most by any WIAC school in women's tennis.
The 2005 WIAC Women's Tennis Championship was determined by using a combination of the regular season dual meet standings and the conference tournament results. The finish in the regular season conference standings accounted for one-third of the criteria, while the WIAC Tournament accounted for the remaining two-thirds.
UW-La Crosse totaled 21 points in the final standings to outdistance defending champion UW-Whitewater, who finished second with 18 points. UW-Eau Claire finished third with 15 points, followed by UW-River Falls with 12 points, UW-Stout with nine points, UW-Stevens Point with five points and UW-Oshkosh with four points.
At the conference tournament, the Eagles compiled 59 points, followed by UW-Whitewater with 53 points, UW-Eau Claire with 44 points, UW-River Falls with 36 points, UW-Stout with 24 points, UW-Stevens Point with 19 points and UW-Oshkosh with 17 points.
Dual meet standings for the 2005 regular season included: UW-La Crosse (6-0) (7 points), UW-Whitewater (5-1) (6 points), UW-Eau Claire (4-2) (5 points), UW-River Falls (3-3) (4 points), UW-Stout (2-4) (3 points), UW-Oshkosh (1-5) (2 points) and UW-Stevens Point (0-6) (1 point).
The Eagles claimed three singles titles during the second day of the league meet. Angie Riedel won the No. 1 singles crown for the second straight year with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 win over UW-Whitewater's Nicole Stamm.
UW-La Crosse's Erica Schmelzer claimed the No. 3 singles title with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over UW-Whitewater's Kara Theis, while Erin Fekete won the No. 4 singles crown with a 6-4, 6-3 triumph over UW-Eau Claire's Molly Hunt.
UW-Whitewater secured the remaining three singles crowns as Jessie Farrar won the No. 2 singles championship with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over UW-La Crosse's Julie Tellefsen. Kara Amundson captured the No. 5 singles championship with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over UW-La Crosse's Louie Dubinski and Tiffany Dawson won the No. 6 singles title with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over UW-River Falls' Mindy Rudiger.
UW-La Crosse claimed all three doubles titles during the first day of conference tournament action as Riedel and Schmelzer won the No. 1 doubles title with an 8-2 win over UW-Eau Claire's Katie Kuzma and Laura Geissler. Tellefsen and Dubinski secured the No. 2 crown with an 8-6 victory over UW-Eau Claire's Kristie Carlson and Hunt. Erin Fekete and Debbie Braun captured the top prize at No. 3 doubles with an 8-3 win over UW-Whitewater's Jennifer Stamm and Dawson.
UW-La Crosse head coach Bill Hehli was voted the Coach of the Year by the league coaches for the second time in his career. He also received the honor during the 2000-01 campaign.
UW-River Falls' Megan Knobloch received the Judy Kruckman Women's Tennis Scholar-Athlete Award.
