UW-Whitewater's Steimle Named Women's Tennis Scholar-Athlete

Madison, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Whitewater's Mary Steimle has been named the 2003 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Judy Kruckman Women's Tennis Scholar-Athlete, it was announced recently by WIAC Commissioner Gary Karner.

Steimle, a senior from Racine, Wis. (St. Catherine's H.S.), is majoring in accounting and end-user technologies and carries a 3.81 grade point average. She was named to the 2002-03 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Scholar-Athlete Team and is a three-time member of the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll. Steimle has been named to UW-Whitewater's Dean's List every semester and has also received the Student-Athlete Academic Achievement Award from her institution each of the last three years.

Steimle, a two-time team captain, helped the Warhawks to a third-place finish at the 2003 league championship by placing fifth at No. 1 doubles. She was a league champion at No. 3 doubles a year ago.

Steimle is a member of the UW-Whitewater Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and an officer of Beta Alpha Psi and the Association of Information Technology Professionals.

Steimle becomes the second women's tennis player in school history to win the league's scholar-athlete award, joining Stephanie Froh who claimed the honor in 1991.

Also nominated for this year's scholar-athlete award were UW-River Falls' Jordan Anderson and Amanda Gray and UW-Stevens Point's Amber Wilkowski.

The WIAC Scholar-Athlete Award is sponsored by Culver's. In order to be nominated for the scholar-athlete award, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.25 grade point average, be in their last year of competition, or on schedule to graduate this academic year, and have competed for a minimum of two years.

Noll Named UW-Stout Women's Tennis Coach

Menomonie, Wis.--Mark Noll has been named as the head coach of the UW-Stout women's tennis team. Noll, a UW-Stout graduate, served as the interim women's tennis coach in the spring of 2003. No stranger to Blue Devil athletics, Noll has been a women's assistant basketball coach for three years, a position he will carry on with. Noll was also an assistant men's basketball coach at Stout. Noll will continue to be an instructor in the physical education department.

"I want to bring a new atmosphere into the women's tennis program," Noll said. "We will accomplish that by working as hard as we can during both practice and competition."

"I appreciate the opportunity to be the head women's tennis coach and expect to bring the program along slowly. I look forward to the challenges of coaching in the WIAC."

Noll, a native of nearby Colfax, has worked with AAU girls programs for the last 15 years, having run AAU camps and tournaments, including serving as tournament supervisor and coach for the immensely popular Great Lakes Shootout held every summer in Menomonie and the surrounding communities.

Noll and his wife, Kara, live in Menomonie with their two children, Jackson and Tyler.

Three Named Intercollegiate Tennis Association Scholar-Athletes

Madison, Wis.--Three Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) women's tennis players have earned Scholar-Athlete honors from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) for the 2002-03 season. UW-Oshkosh's Debra Ashenbrenner and Michelle Baur and UW-Whitewater's Mary Steimle represented the league on the team.

The conference trio represented 203 student-athletes from NCAA Division III institutions to earn the scholastic distinction.

In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must be a varsity letterwinner, maintain a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year and have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters (including freshman through senior year).
