UW-Whitewater Captures Third Consecutive Women’s Tennis Title
University of Wisconsin-Whitewater captured its third consecutive Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) women’s tennis championship following completion of the two-day event that was held at Nielsen Tennis Stadium on Oct. 24-25.
The league crown for the Warhawks is the 10th in program history and first time a team has claimed three straight first-place trophies since UW-Eau Claire won 10 consecutive titles from 1993-2002. UW-Whitewater totaled 21 points in the final overall championship standings to surpass UW-La Crosse’s second-place total of 18, UW-Eau Claire was third with 15, UW-Stevens Point fourth with 12, UW-River Falls fifth with nine, UW-Oshkosh sixth with six and UW-Stout seventh with three.
UW-Eau Claire, UW-La Crosse, UW-Stevens Point and UW-Whitewater advance to a team tournament to decide the conference’s automatic qualifier for the NCAA Division III Championship. The WIAC team tournament will be held at UW-Whitewater the weekend prior to the NCAA championship in the spring.
The team title was determined using a combination of the regular season dual meet standings and the conference championship results. The finish in the regular season standings accounted for one-third of the criteria, while the WIAC championship accounted for the remaining two-thirds.
Point distribution following the dual meet rotation included: UW-Whitewater (6-0) (7 points), UW-La Crosse (5-1) (6 points), UW-Eau Claire (4-2) (5 points), UW-Stevens Point (3-3) (4 points), UW-River Falls (2-4) (3 points), UW-Oshkosh (1-5) (2 points) and UW-Stout (0-6) (1 point).
UW-Whitewater’s winning effort included two singles titles and three first-place finishes at doubles. Amy Siemon won her second straight league crown with a 6-0, 6-0 triumph over UW-Eau Claire’s Megan Born at No. 3 singles. Siemon won the No. 4 singles title in 2008.
Michelle Daciolas captured the No. 5 singles championship for the second consecutive season with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over UW-La Crosse’s Mara Weiner.
In doubles competition, the Warhawks' Kalla Schaefer and Michelle Daciolas were victorious at No. 1 by an 8-6 margin over UW-Stevens Point’s Rachel Benn and Chelsea Allbaugh. A year ago, Schaefer won the No. 1 singles flight, while Daciolas was a champion at No. 2.
Ingrid Stensvaag and Annie Smith emerged with the No. 2 crown after an 8-5 triumph over UW-La Crosse’s Sarah Schoenwaelder and Carlie Bohrman. Stensvaag won the No. 2 plaque for the second straight year.
At No. 3 doubles, Amy Siemon and Kelly Rutkowski claimed an 8-1 victory over UW-Eau Claire’s Megan Born and Taylor Heltne. Siemon captured the No. 1 crown in 2008 and No. 3 title in 2007.
UW-La Crosse earned three singles crowns led by Kelly Kuether’s victory at No. 1. She claimed a 6-4, 6-7 (5), 7-5 victory over UW-Stout’s Allie Hinman.
Kelly Stadum captured the No. 2 singles championship with a 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (1) win over UW-Stevens Point’s Chelsea Allbaugh.
UW-La Crosse’s Carlie Bohrman earned the second title of her career with a 6-4, 6-4 win over UW-Whitewater’s Annie Smith at No. 4 singles. Bohrman was the No. 5 singles champion in 2006.
At No. 6 singles, UW-Eau Claire’s Taylor Heltne emerged with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 victory over UW-Whitewater’s Kathleen Kappel.
