2017 Men's Cross Country Athletes of the Week
Week of Oct. 16 - 22
Kyle Herbrand, Junior (Dane, Wis./Sauk Prairie), of UW-Platteville
Herbrand won the UW-Oshkosh Open by a 19-second margin and a time of 27:05. He held back during the first few miles before pressing in the middle portion of the race. He passed and pulled away from the leader in the fourth mile and cruised to the finish. This was Herbrand's first collegiate cross country win.

Darin Lau, Senior (Eau Claire, Wis./Immanuel Lutheran), of UW-Eau Claire
Lau placed third out of 354 runners with an 8,000-meter time of 24:46 at the Pre-National “Cowbell Classic” hosted by Principia College in Elsah, Ill., on Oct. 14. He helped the Blugolds finish 11th in the 38-team event.

Week of Oct. 2 - 8
Cody Chadwick, Freshman (Poynette, Wis.), of UW-Oshkosh
Chadwick finished fourth among 95 runners to help UW-Oshkosh win the Gene Davis Invitational held Oct. 7 in Appleton, Wis. Chadwick completed the 6,000-meter course with a time of 26:42 to rank as UW-Oshkosh’s top runner. Lawrence University's (Wis.) Josh Janusiak won the race with a time of 25:43 while Viking teammate Joe Kortenhof finished third in 26:22. Former Titan Joe Zack ran unattached and placed second with a time of 25:52. UW-Oshkosh scored 42 points to defeat seven other teams, including second-place UW-Stevens Point, which tallied 69. Host Lawrence University finished third with 92 points, while Wisconsin Track Club placed fourth with 103 and Carroll University (Wis.) fifth with 123.

Week of Sept. 25 - Oct. 1
Walker Rynes, Senior (Norwalk, Wis./Brookwood), of UW-Platteville
Rynes was the second collegiate individual (third overall) in a time of 25:07.1 at the UW-Eau Claire Blugold Invitational on Sept. 29. He ran a personal best time by 34 seconds and 1:16 faster than his previous best at that course.

Week of Sept. 18 - 24
Austin Zajkowski, Senior (Oak Creek, Wis.), of UW-La Crosse
Zajkowski led UW-La Crosse to a fourth-place finish at the 32nd Annual University of Minnesota Roy Griak Invitational at Les Bolstad Golf Course on Sept. 23. A total of 41 teams competed. Zajkowski finished 38th overall in running the 8,000-meter course in 26:57.9. A total of 414 runners completed the course. The race featured NCAA Division II schools.

Week of Sept. 11 - 17
Darin Lau, Senior (Eau Claire, Wis./Immanuel Lutheran), of UW-Eau Claire
Lau won the St. Olaf College (Minn.) Invitational for the second year in a row, leading the Blugolds to the team title. He covered the 8,000-meter course in 25:11 and finished 23 seconds ahead of Donson Cook-Gallardo of Carleton College (Minn.). The invitational included a field of 278 runners.

Week of Sept. 4 - 10
Brian McKnight, Junior (Oshkosh, Wis.), of UW-Oshkosh
McKnight finished 27th among 167 runners as UW-Oshkosh opened its 2017 season with a seventh-place standing at the Vic Godfrey Open held Sept. 9 in Somers. He completed the 8,000-meter race in a time of 26:39 to rank as UW-Oshkosh’s top finisher. Armando Torres of NCAA Division II UW-Parkside won the race with a time of 25:05. Following 10 seconds behind Torres at 25:15 was second-place finisher Daniel Pederson of Division I Marquette University. Marquette University captured the team title with 27 points. Division I DePaul University (Ill.) finished second in the team standings with 74 points while UW-Parkside and Division II Michigan Tech placed third and fourth with 94 and 110 points, respectively. UW-Oshkosh, one of three Division III programs at the meet, tallied 194 points to gather its seventh-place finish.
