Blugolds Picked To Win Fourth Consecutive Women’s Soccer Crown
MADISON, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire is picked to win its fourth consecutive Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) women’s soccer championship, based on a poll of the league’s sports information directors.
The Blugolds received five first-place votes in the conference survey and have gone unbeaten (21-0-3) in WIAC contests the last three seasons. UW-Eau Claire has made three consecutive NCAA tournament appearances and returns a pair of three-time All-WIAC first team selections in senior forward Liz Kooistra and senior defender Allison Smith.
Senior goalkeeper Allie Rivard posted a 0.43 goals against average a year ago - the fourth-best mark in league history, while her miniscule 0.38 career mark leads the WIAC chart.
UW-Stevens Point, ranked 20th in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas NCAA Division III Preseason Poll, claimed the remaining four first-place votes and is expected to finish second in the nine-team league derby.
The Pointers have won 11 conference championships - with the most recent in 2004 - and made 12 NCAA tournament showings. Senior forwards Amanda Prawat and Kaylee Weise were the top two goal scorers in the WIAC last season, registering 26 and 16 goals, respectively. Prawat’s 26 goals and 61 points ranked as the fourth-best totals in league history. Entering her 22nd season, head coach Sheila Miech ranks sixth on the NCAA Division III all-time wins list with 301 victories.
UW-Whitewater recorded the second-highest victory totals in program history with 12 overall wins and five WIAC triumphs last season. The Warhawks also advanced to the semifinals of the conference tournament for the first time since 2000 and established a school record with 11 shutouts. UW-Whitewater will play its six home contests at Fiskum Field - a new facility on campus.
UW-La Crosse returns 10 starters from last year’s club that claimed the most overall victories (11) since 2004 and most league wins (five) since 2003. The Eagles earned their first WIAC tournament triumph since 1999 and were 7-2 in matches decided by one goal. UW-La Crosse will play a league-high 10 home matches at Fields for Kids in La Crosse due to the construction of the Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex.
UW-Oshkosh has recorded eight consecutive winning seasons and placed in the top three of the WIAC ledger six times in the last seven years. The Titans rebounded from a 1-6 start to the 2007 season by posting a 8-3-1 record their final 12 matches. Head coach Erin Coppernoll needs six wins to become the winningest coach in school history - surpassing the 54 wins by Scott Haywood from 1999-03.
UW-Stout returns nine of 11 starters and seven seniors, plus two sophomores who were out last year, but played a big part in the 2006 campaign. The top three returning scorers are sophomores, including Kaitlin Arjes, Katie Ness and Jessica Price. Last season’s squad dropped six matches by one goal.
UW-River Falls’ 2008 roster includes five seniors - the most in program archives – and returns 84 percent of the team’s goal scoring from 2007. The Falcons also boast six juniors, five sophomores and six freshmen.
UW-Platteville held seven of the eight WIAC opponents to one goal or fewer in 2007. The Pioneers return 17 letterwinners and nine starters from last year’s squad - both the most in school history. Gone from last year’s team is goalkeeper Laurie Trifone who ranks second on the conference career list with 6,549 minutes played.
Melissa Nelmark begins her first head coaching assignment at UW-Superior after serving as an assistant coach for the program the last three years. The Yellowjackets have registered a 33-2-6 record against non-league opponents the last four seasons.
