Pointers, Blugolds Lead All-Conference Women’s Soccer Selections

Madison, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and UW-Stevens Point combined for 13 of the 22 spots on the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) All-Conference Women’s Soccer Team, which was recently selected by the conference coaches. Stevens Point’s Mickey Jacob was selected the Player of the Year, while her coach, Sheila Miech, was named the Coach of the Year.

Jacob helped the Pointers to their fifth straight WIAC title and a berth in the NCAA Division III Tournament this season. The Pointers also own the nation’s longest all-time conference winning streak, having won 55 straight against WIAC opponents. Jacob earned her second career All-WIAC honor and was joined by teammates Jenny Bruce and Molly Cady as other two-time All-WIAC selections. Other Pointers honored were Brianna Hyslop, Kelly Fink, Macy Mory and Tara Schmitt.

Jacob had six goals and five assists this season and was the leader of a Pointer defense that tied a school record, allowing just ten goals, while posting 13 shutouts in 20 matches. She scored goals in both of the Pointers’ NCAA tournament matches this season.

Bruce led the WIAC and ranked third in Division III with 16 assists (0.80/m), while also scoring 13 goals. Her 42 points ranked second in the WIAC this season and her 16 assists are the fourth highest single-season total in WIAC history.

Cady totaled 13 goals and six assists this season, giving her 30 goals and 32 assists in her three-year career. Her 13 goals (0.65/m) this season ranked third in the WIAC.

Hyslop complied a league-best 0.58 goals against average and six solo shutouts this season. She allowed just ten goals in 1,555 minutes played and finished with a 0.73 career goals against average, which ranks third in WIAC history.

Fink had 22 goals and five assists to lead the WIAC in both goals scored and points. She became just the second player in Stevens Point history to score over 20 goals in a season.

Mory was the backbone of the Pointers’ record-tying defense and was a key reason that the Pointers allowed just 18 corner kick opportunities in 20 matches this season. Schmitt was also a key to the defense that allowed opponents just 5.8 shot attempts per match.

Eau Claire made its seventh appearance in the WIAC Tournament championship match this season and posted a 10-5-4 record. The Blugolds’ Megan Brady, Christy McKew, Jullia Powell, Sarah Pierringer, Erika Thompson and Tina Welle all were recognized as All-WIAC performers.

Thompson, a four-time All-WIAC honoree, posted 24 points on nine goals and six assists this season. Her point total was the seventh-highest mark in the WIAC. Powell had 16 points on six goals and four assists.

McKew, Pierringer and Welle spearheaded a Blugold defense that shutout eight opponents and only four times in 19 matches allowed more than one goal.

Brady posted the second-best goals against average mark in the conference at 0.91, while playing 1,284 minutes.

Amanda Feutz, Julie Taylor and Amanda Pickett represented La Crosse on the All-WIAC squad. Feutz ranked tenth in the conference in points (1.19/m) and tallied seven goals and five assists. Taylor registered 15 points on six goals and three assists this season, while Pickett played in all 16 contests for the Eagle defense, which ranked fourth in the WIAC in scoring, allowing 1.16 goals per match.

Oshkosh, which posted the fewest losses in school history and an overall record of 13-3-1, landed two players on the All-WIAC team. Carrie Gilbert spearheaded a Titan defense that allowed the fewest goals in school history with 12. Additionally, the Titan defense posted nine shutouts, the second-best mark in the conference, and allowed more than one goal only twice this season. Gilbert was an All-WIAC selection last season. Lindsay Rau registered ten points on five goals this season, while starting 15 of 17 contests.

River Falls’ Amy Gilfillan was the scoring leader for the Falcons this season, ranking second in the league in goals (0.93/m) and third in points (2.00/m).

Nellie Sivertsen helped Stout to the most wins in Blue Devil soccer history this season at 10-9-1. She ranked sixth in the league in points (1.35/m) and seventh in goals (0.55/m). She led the Blue Devils in points (27) and goals (11). Sivertsen holds the Blue Devil career records for points (76) and goals (32).

Whitewater’s Kristin Singer tallied one assist and helped the Warhawk defense shutout six opponents in the 2001 campaign.

Platteville’s Jessi Jones led the Pioneers with 12 points and five goals this season.

Stevens Point head coach Sheila Miech was named the Coach of the Year by her peers, marking the second-consecutive season and fifth time in her 15-year career she has won the honor. Miech has led the Pointers to nine WIAC Championships. Earlier this season, she became just the fourth NCAA Division III coach to win 200 career matches. She owns a 216-73-16 career record.
