Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's Potrykus Receives Tom Butler Award

Madison, Wis.--Jeff Potrykus of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel has been named the recipient of the 2003-04 Tom Butler Award from the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC).

Potrykus has covered collegiate athletics in the state of Wisconsin, including the WIAC, for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel since the early 1990s. He has served as the newspaper's No. 1 football writer and backup basketball writer for University of Wisconsin-Madison since the 1999-2000 academic year.

He began working with the Milwaukee Journal in January, 1985 covering prep sports and in the spring of 1995 he started covering UW-Madison athletics until 1997 for "Badger Plus". Potrykus also covered the Green Bay Packers in 1997 for "Packer Plus".

Potrykus, a native of Milwaukee, Wis., graduated magna cum laude from UW-Whitewater in May, 1984 with a bachelor of arts degree in communications.

The Tom Butler Award has been presented annually by the conference since 1998 and is voted on by the conference's sports information directors. The award is given to a representative of the print or electronic media who is considered to have provided outstanding coverage to WIAC athletics. The honor is dedicated to Tom Butler, who served the conference faithfully for nearly three decades as its sports information director.
