UW-Whitewater's
Coulthart Dedication Set for September 2
Whitewater,
Wis.--Charles "Chuck" Coulthart, a 1961 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater
graduate and a dedicated community servant since, will be honored with
the naming of a gathering place on the UW-Whitewater campus in his name.
The Coulthart Family Pavilion,
in honor of Chuck and his family, will be dedicated Saturday, September
2 at 6:00, one hour before UW-W kicks of its 2006 football schedule by
hosting Lakeland College in Perkins Stadium. The public is invited to
attend the dedication ceremony, where food and beverages will be provided.
The 40 by 80 foot facility, currently
under construction, is an open air structure that will be located between
Perkins Stadium and van Steenderen Softball Complex on the north end of
the UW-W campus. It will provide a place for tailgating, picnics, and
other gatherings for events hosted by the campus, Whitewater High School
and the community.
"Chuck was a student-athlete,
administrator and friend who made a significant and lasting impact on
the lives of many in Whitewater," UW-W director of athletics Dr.
Paul Plinske said. "This facility will be used for numerous campus
and community endeavors, and we couldn't be more proud to name it after
a very worthy individual."
Coulthart, originally from Racine
(Park High School) where he played football and basketball and competed
in track. His senior year at Park he was all-city on both offense and
defense. He left Racine to play football for Forrest Perkins at UW-Whitewater,
and he lettered all four years (1957-60). He averaged 5.8 yards per carry
in his career for the Warhawks, scoring 24 touchdowns, playing a key role
in UW-W's Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships
in 1959, when he played both ways, and 1960. Coulthart was elected to
the university's Athletics Hall of Fame in 1979.
Coulthart returned to Racine to
teach for one year after graduation, but came back to Whitewater in 1962
to coach football and golf and teach in the district. He guided Whitewater
High School to conference golf titles in 1967 and '68. In 1969 he became
the recreation director for the city of Whitewater and began expanding
the role and offerings of the department. When the position grew to require
a full-time director, Coulthart returned to Whitewater High School as
the director of athletics in 1976, the same year he finished a master's
degree at UW-W.
Coulthart was also active as a
sport official, as part of the official scoring table for several sports,
as an officer in the W-Club Alumni Association, as president of UW-W's
Quarterback Club (the football booster group), president of the Jaycees,
and the UW-W Athletics Hall of Fame Committee. He received the Outstanding
Jaycees Award in 1967 and the Community Distinguished Service Award in
1971.
Chuck and his wife JoAnne have
two sons, Tim and Craig.
