RELEASED: Monday, May 18, 2009 UW-Eau Claire and UW-Stevens Point Receive All-Sports Awards
UW-Eau Claire totaled 53.5 points to win its third consecutive women’s award - and ninth in school history - after capturing women’s conference championships in cross country and volleyball, while recording second-place finishes in golf, soccer and indoor track and field. The Blugolds were followed in the standings by UW-La Crosse (48.5), UW-Whitewater (47.5), UW-Stevens Point (46), UW-Oshkosh (40.5), UW-River Falls (27.5), UW-Stout (27), UW-Platteville (23) and UW-Superior (13.5). UW-Stevens Point’s men’s award is its first since 2004 and 10th in school history, while the combined trophy is the third in school listings. The Pointers earned men’s WIAC championships in cross country, football, basketball, swimming and diving and baseball, and added women’s crowns in golf, soccer and basketball. UW-Stevens Point was followed in the men’s standings by UW-Whitewater (33), UW-La Crosse (31.5), UW-Oshkosh (30), UW-Eau Claire (25), UW-Platteville (20.5), UW-Stout (15.5), UW-River Falls (14) and UW-Superior (10.5). The combined standings included a three-way tie for second between UW-Eau Claire, UW-La Crosse and UW-Whitewater (80.5). That trio was followed by UW-Oshkosh (70.5), UW-Platteville (43.5), UW-Stout (42.5), UW-River Falls (41.5) and UW-Superior (24). The three All-Sports Awards are given annually by the conference. Points for the awards are given according to the final conference standings in each sport on a 9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis, or 8-7-6, etc., depending on how many schools compete in each sport. Either (but not both) indoor or outdoor track and field are included in the calculations and the awards are determined on the basis of the lowest number of sports offered by any WIAC institution in each category.
