Four Finish in Top 18 of Directors’ Cup Standings

United States Sports AcademyMadison, Wis.--Four Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) institutions have finished in the top 18 of the United States Sports Academy Directors’ Cup final standings for the 2006-07 academic year.  The standings recognize the best NCAA Division III overall athletics programs in the country.

UW-La Crosse finished seventh with 718.75 points, while UW-Oshkosh placed 12th with 601 points, UW-Stevens Point was 13th with 598 points and UW-Eau Claire took 18th with 525 points.

Additional WIAC finishes included:  UW-Whitewater in 32nd with 410.50 points, UW-Platteville in 45th with 349.50 points, UW-River Falls in 119th with 158.50 points, UW-Stout in 232nd with 51 points and UW-Superior in 312th with five points.

The conference won three national championships during the 2006-07 season, including UW-La Crosse in men’s outdoor track and field and UW-Oshkosh in women’s outdoor track and field and women’s gymnastics.  The gymnastics title was awarded by the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association.

Williams College (Mass.) won its 11th Directors’ Cup title in the last 12 years with 1137.50 points, followed by Middlebury College (Vt.) in second with 1064.50 points, State University of New York-Cortland in third with 892.75 points, Amherst College (Mass.) in fourth with 887.25 points and Washington University (Mo.) in fifth with 845 points.

The United States Sports Academy Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today.  The United States Sports Academy, based in Daphne, Alabama, is the program sponsor.  Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 14 sports -- seven women's and seven men's.
