Three Ranked in Top 18 of Directors’ Cup Standings

USSAMadison, Wis.--Three Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) institutions are ranked in the top 18 of the 2006-07 Sports Academy Directors’ Cup standings, following the completion of the fall season.  The standings recognize the best NCAA Division III overall athletics programs in the country.

UW-Eau Claire is ranked 12th with 182 points, while UW-Whitewater is 13th with 173 points and UW-La Crosse is tied for 18th with 155 points.  UW-Oshkosh also earned a spot in the fall rankings, finishing 43rd with 113 points.

Calvin College (Mich.) leads the fall standings after compiling 322 points.   The Knights are followed by Washington University (Mo.) with 283 points, Messiah College (Pa.) with 273 points, Amherst College (Mass.) with 263 points and The College of New Jersey with 256 points.

UW-Eau Claire earned ninth-place finishes in women’s soccer and women’s volleyball and added a 12th-place standing in women’s cross country.  UW-Whitewater finished second in football and third in women’s volleyball, while UW-La Crosse placed ninth in football, 11th in men’s cross country and 15th in women’s cross country.

The current 2006-07 standings are based upon the completion of women and men's cross country, field hockey, football, women and men's soccer and women's volleyball.

In last year’s Directors’ Cup final standings the WIAC placed five institutions in the top 33.  UW-La Crosse led the conference contingent with a 14th-place finish, UW-Stevens Point placed 22nd, UW-Eau Claire ended 27th, UW-Whitewater finished 29th and UW-Oshkosh placed 33rd.

The Sports Academy Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. The United States Sports Academy, based in Daphne, Alabama, is the program sponsor. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 18 sports -- nine women's and nine men's.
