UW-Stevens Point’s Trempe Named Judy Kruckman Indoor Track & Field Scholar-Athlete

MADISON, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point’s Leah Trempe has been selected the recipient of the 2018 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Judy Kruckman Women's Indoor Track & Field Scholar-Athlete Award.
 
A senior from Combined Locks, Wis. (Kimberly), Trempe sustains a 3.72 grade point average and is majoring in English education drama with a coaching certification minor. A year ago, she earned a spot on the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic Team. Trempe is a three-time member of the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll and been recognized on UW-Stevens Point’s Dean’s List and Honor Roll.  She has earned academic scholarships and received the Dean’s Distinguished Achievement Award – English.
 
Trempe placed seventh in the 400-meter dash at this year’s conference championship for the second straight year. She also anchored the 4x400-meter relay team to a third-place finish for the second consecutive season. At the 2016 championship, she was fourth in the 400-meter dash and 4x400-meter relay. A season ago, Trempe earned All-America honors when her 4x400-meter relay squad placed eighth at the NCAA Division III championship. In 2016, she received UW-Stevens Point’s Most Improved award.
 
She is president of Sigma Tau Delta and a member of Phi Eta Sigma. Trempe has served as president of Lincoln Hill Poetry Workshop and volunteer for College Day For Kids, as well as Read Across America.
 
Also nominated for this year's scholar-athlete award were:  UW-Eau Claire’s Kelsey Worachek (Sr., Appleton, Wis./Xavier); UW-La Crosse’s Sadie Kroll (Sr., Hudson, Wis.); UW-Oshkosh’s Jessica Stamn (Sr., Waukesha, Wis./West); UW-Platteville’s Hannah Ihlenfeldt (Sr., Appleton, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran); UW-Stout’s Aryn Benn (Sr., Waukesha, Wis./Mukwonago); and UW-Whitewater’s Liz Mielke (Jr., Whitewater, Wis.).
 
The WIAC Scholar-Athlete Award is named after Judy Kruckman who served as Assistant Commissioner for the WIAC from 1996-98. Prior to this appointment, she was Commissioner of the Wisconsin Women's Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WWIAC) from October, 1984 - September, 1996. Kruckman was the women's athletics director at UW-Eau Claire from 1974-84, and one of the original representatives to the WWIAC when it formed in 1971. She was inducted into the WIAC Hall of Fame in 2012.

In order to be nominated for the scholar-athlete award, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.50 grade point average. In addition, she must be in her last year of competition, or on schedule to graduate this academic year, and have competed for a minimum of two years.
