MADISON, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire’s Patrick Moore was chosen the Player of the Year to top the individuals selected to the 2017 All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Men’s Ice Hockey Team by the league coaches. In addition, UW-Eau Claire head coach Matt Loen was tabbed the Coach of the Year.
Moore received first team accolades for the second straight year and becomes the second consecutive Blugold to claim the player of the year trophy after Tyler Green was recognized in 2016. Moore ranks second in the conference with 17 goals, 22 assists and 39 points. He has also added three game-winning goals and a league-leading six power-play goals. Moore has recorded at least one point in 22 games, including 12 multi-point performances and a season-high three goals and four points against UW-Superior on Jan. 28.
Repeat choices on the first team from a year ago included: UW-Stevens Point’s Lawrence Cornellier; and UW-Superior’s Eric Shand and Anton Svensson. Shand claimed first team laurels for the fourth consecutive season, joining Dale Lupul (2002-05) as the only players in program history to accomplish the feat. UW-Eau Claire’s Jay Deo and UW-Stevens Point’s Kyle Sharkey were first team honorees in 2015.
Loen received the coaching award for the fifth time in his career – all within the last eight seasons. UW-Eau Claire owns an 18-6-3 record and has earned a spot in the finals of the WIAC Championship (presented by Culver’s). The Blugolds had a 10-game unbeaten stretch earlier this season for their longest streak since Oct. 26 - Nov. 30, 2012 (11 games).
An All-Sportsmanship Team was chosen for individuals that displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season. It included one member from each school.
