UW-Whitewater Wins Women’s Golf Championship

REEDSBURG, Wis.
--University of Wisconsin-Whitewater captured the 2017 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Women’s Golf Championship (Presented by Culver’s) at Reedsburg Country Club on Oct. 8.
 
The Warhawks won the third title in program history and first since 1999. UW-Whitewater also won the inaugural championship in 1996. This year’s crown was secured with 942 strokes to surpass the 959 strokes by defending champion UW-Stout. UW-Oshkosh placed third with 962 strokes, while UW-Eau Claire was fourth with 983, UW-Platteville fifth with 1,042, UW-River Falls sixth with 1,048 and UW-Stevens Point seventh with 1,114. The Warhawks secured an automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Championship that will be conducted May 8-11, 2018, in Howie-in-the-Hills, Fla.
 
UW-Whitewater’s CheyAnn Knudsen captured medalist honors in the 52-player field with 233 strokes. Her individual title marks the second straight year that a Warhawk has earned the distinction after Ashley Hofmeister was victorious in 2016. Hofmeister took second this year with 234 strokes, while UW-Oshkosh’s Kayla Priebe was second with 235 and UW-Stout’s Rachel Hernandez and UW-Whitewater’s Maddie McCue tied for fourth with 236. UW-Oshkosh’s Micayla Richards and UW-Stout’s Trystin Kluess tied for sixth with 238, while UW-Whitewater’s Kelly Storti was eighth with 239, UW-Eau Claire’s Allison Chomniak ninth with 240 and UW-Oshkosh’s Hannah Braun 10th with 241.
 
UW-Stout head coach Howie Samb was selected the Coach of the Year for the second straight year and seventh time in the last nine years. UW-Stout’s Rachel Hernandez was named the recipient of the Judy Kruckman Scholar-Athlete Award.
 
An All-Sportsmanship Team was chosen for individuals that displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season. It included one member from each school. Named to the squad were:  UW-Eau Claire’s Whitney DeMoe; UW-Oshkosh’s Micayla Richards; UW-Platteville’s Lindsay Neitzel; UW-River Falls’ Miranda Ray; UW-Stevens Point’s Maddison Williams; UW-Stout’s Madison McCambridge; and UW-Whitewater’s Hayley Jefferson.
