UW-La Crosse Captures 26th Straight Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Crown
WHITEWATER, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-La Crosse won its 26th straight championship at the 2016 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Championship (presented by Culver’s) at Rex Foster Track Complex and Fiskum Field on May 7.
The Eagles earned the 52nd first-place finish in program archives with 201 points. UW-Whitewater took second with 141.5 points, UW-Oshkosh third with 130, UW-Platteville fourth with 116, UW-Stevens Point fifth with 80, UW-Eau Claire sixth with 76, UW-Stout seventh with 56 and UW-River Falls eighth with 17.5.
UW-La Crosse won three individual titles and one relay crown during the second day of competition. Ernest Winters captured the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash with times of 10.48 and 21.30, respectively. He was also a member of the first-place 4x100-meter relay squad that had a time of 41.28. He was joined by Ryan Send, Zach Rothering and Joe Koenecke. Cyrus Mason secured the 800-meter run with a time of 1:52.59.
UW-Eau Claire, UW-Platteville, UW-Stout and UW-Whitewater each had a pair of first-place performances in individual events. The Blugolds’ Jimmy Paske captured the 400-meter dash with a time of 47.50 to win the program’s first title in the event since 1990. Alex Mess had a championship toss of 57-7 in the shot put.
The Pioneers’ Dan Arnold established a conference-meet record of 13.93 in the 110-meter high hurdles, while Ian LaMere was victorious in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:39.96.
The BlueDevils’ Eric Fogltanz won the 400-meter intermediate hurdles with a time of 52.86, while Ethen Schoen produced 6,577 points in the decathlon.
The Warhawks received first-place performances from Robert Starnes in the high jump and Theron Baumann in the discus. Starnes had a height of 6-6, while Baumann had a toss of 166-0.
UW-Oshkosh’s Roberto Lara was triumphant in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 3:54.95. The Titans’ 4x400-meter relay quartet of Ryan Powers, Danny Trimner, Garrison Griest and Kallen Bentz sprinted to a first-place time of 3:13.24.
UW-Stevens Point’s Jerry Williams claimed the triple jump for the second time in his career with a leap of 47-1 1/2. He also won the event in 2014.
UW-Whitewater’s Michael Judd received the Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete Award (sponsored by Badgerland Financial).
The Larry Zirgibel All-Sportsmanship Team was chosen for individuals that displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season. It included one member from each school. Named to the squad were: UW-Eau Claire’s Kevin Brooks; UW-La Crosse’s Cyrus Mason; UW-Oshkosh’s Ryne Scopp; UW-Platteville’s Matthew Dwyer; UW-River Falls’ Benjamin McRoberts; UW-Stevens Point’s Jordan Richards; UW-Stout’s Matt Message; and UW-Whitewater’s Scott Wolter.
