UW-Stevens Point Wins Men’s Swimming & Diving Championship

BROWN DEER, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point captured its 17th straight title at the 2016 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Men’s Swimming & Diving Championship (presented by Culver’s) at Walter Schroeder Aquatic Center on Feb. 20.
 
The Pointers collected the 20th league championship in program history with 916.50 points to easily surpass UW-Whitewater’s second-place total of 742.50 points. UW-Eau Claire finished third with 594 points, UW-La Crosse fourth with 563 and UW-Oshkosh fifth with 221.

UW-Stevens Point claimed four individual titles and one relay crown during the third day of competition. Nate Somers won the 1,650-yard freestyle with a conference-meet record time of 15:49.36 and was selected the Swimmer of the Meet for his efforts during the three-day championship. Joe Hollman successfully defended his title in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:05.52.
 
Ethan Bott won the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:50.78, while Jack Englehardt posted a first-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 46.18. Englehardt also contributed to the victorious 400-yard freestyle relay squad that had a time of 3:04.38. He was joined by Andrew King, Kyle McNair and Reilly Donnellan.
 
UW-La Crosse’s Tanner Folvag won the one-meter diving competition with a score of 473.90 and secured Diver of the Meet recognition.
 
UW-Eau Claire’s Ryan Young was victorious in the 200-yard butterfly in 1:51.62.
 
UW-Stevens Point’s Kyle McNair received the Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete Award, which is sponsored by Badgerland Financial. His head coach, Al Boelk, claimed Coach of the Year laurels.

1,650-Yard Freestyle:  Nate Somers (UW-Stevens Point), 15:49.36*   
200-Yard Backstroke:  Ethan Bott (UW-Stevens Point), 1:50.78  
200-Yard Breaststroke:  Joe Hollman (UW-Stevens Point), 2:05.52 
200-Yard Butterfly:  Ryan Young (UW-Eau Claire), 1:51.62
One-Meter Diving:  Tanner Folvag (UW-La Crosse), 473.90
