UW-La Crosse Holds Lead At Women’s Swimming & Diving Championship
BROWN DEER, Wis.--University of La Crosse maintained its leads following the second of three days of competition at the 2016 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Women’s Swimming & Diving Championship (presented by Culver’s) at Walter Schroeder Aquatic Center on Feb. 19.
The four-time defending champion Eagles have compiled 523 points through 13 events. UW-Eau Claire sits in second-place with 510 points, while UW-Whitewater is third with 452, UW-Stevens Point fourth with 370 and UW-Oshkosh fifth with 190.
UW-La Crosse’s Sara Zemanovic posted a first-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle for the second time in her career with a time of 1:52.32. She also won the event at the 2013 championship. Zemanovic was also a member of the winning 800-yard freestyle relay team that had a time of 7:44.41. She was joined by Mikayla Beuch, Courtney Boak and Anna Landgraf.
UW-Eau Claire’s Samantha Senczyszyn captured the 100-yard breaststroke after touching the wall in 1:00.91, while Jessica Short was victorious in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 56.55. Senczyszyn also helped the 200-yard medley relay team to a first-place time of 1:44.62.
UW-Whitewater’s Sarah Arteaga won her second straight title in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:33.54, while teammate Michaela Matthys captured the 100-yard butterfly for the second straight year with a performance of 57.01. She was joined by Madeline Gray, Rachel Treadway and Allison Hable.
All-Sportsmanship Team was chosen for individuals that displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season. It included one member from each school. Named to the squad were: UW-Eau Claire’s Nina Tabatabai; UW-La Crosse’s Katelyn DeStarkey; UW-Oshkosh’s Alison Panske; UW-Stevens Point’s Emily Nienhaus; and UW-Whitewater’s McKenzie Asplund.
