UW-Stevens Point’s Gibson Headlines All-WIAC Men’s Ice Hockey Selections; Loen Selected Coach of the Year

MADISON, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point’s Kevin Gibson was chosen the Player of the Year to headline the individuals selected to the 2015 All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Men’s Ice Hockey Team by the league coaches. In addition, UW-Eau Claire’s Matt Loen was picked the Coach of the Year.
Gibson is the second consecutive Pointer to win Player of the Year honors. He claimed first team laurels for the second straight season and leads the conference with 22 assists, while ranking second with a plus/minus of +25. Gibson tops all league defensemen with 29 points and has added three power-play goals, along with two game-winning goals.
He has recorded at least one point in 19 of 27 games, including multiple points in eight contests. Gibson recorded a season-high four points against UW-Superior on Feb. 21.
Repeat selections on the first team from a season ago included UW-Stevens Point’s Kyle Brodie, Brandon Jaeger and Garrett Ladd (Player of the Year), along with UW-Superior’s Eric Shand. Jaeger also received first team recognition in 2012.
UW-Eau Claire’s Jack Callahan and UW-Stevens Point’s Alex Brooks were first team selections in 2013.
Loen secured the coaching honor for fourth time in the last six seasons and fourth time in his career. He has directed the Blugolds to a second-place finish in the WIAC standings and 18-7-2 overall record – the third consecutive season UW-Eau Claire has posted at least 18 victories.
An All-Sportsmanship Team was chosen for individuals that displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season. It included one member from each school.
