UW-Whitewater Claims Women’s Gymnastics Title
ST. PAUL, Minn.--University of Wisconsin-Whitewater claimed the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) women’s gymnastics championship at Hamline University’s Hutton Arena on March 15.
The Warhawks collected the fourth league title in program history - and fourth in the last six years - with a score of 191.750. Defending champion UW-La Crosse finished second with 190.875, while UW-Stout was third with 187.825, Winona State University fourth with 187.675, Hamline University fifth with 187.100, UW-Eau Claire sixth with 184.475, UW-Oshkosh seventh with 181.625 and Gustavus Adolphus College eighth with 180.025.
The conference championship also served as the West Region qualifier for the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association Championship that will be hosted by UW-La Crosse March 27-28. UW-Whitewater, UW-La Crosse and UW-Stout earned spots into the national event by placing in the top three.
UW-Whitewater had three individuals produce first-place finishes at the league meet, including Katie Fiorilli, who claimed the vault with a score of 9.775. She was victorious in the all-around a season ago.
Courtney Pickett earned the all-around crown with a score of 38.300 and Kate Mierow produced a winning score of 9.625 in the balance beam.
UW-La Crosse’s Amy Enright claimed the uneven bars with a score of 9.850, while UW-Stout’s Kaylee Jondahl captured the floor exercise with a score of 9.825.
The top-six individuals in each event secured All-Conference recognition. UW-La Crosse’s Kelsi Vomacka received the Judy Kruckman Scholar-Athlete Award.
An All-Sportsmanship Team was chosen for individuals that displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season. It included one member from each school. Named to the squad were: UW-Eau Claire’s Kellie Dougherty; Gustavus Adolphus College’s Rachel Thiner; Hamline University’s Mickaela O’Malley; UW-La Crosse’s Kelsi Vomacka; UW-Oshkosh’s Valene Knutson; UW-Stout’s Stephanie Shields; UW-Whitewater’s Alexis Williams; and Winona State’s Emily Goldeman.
