UW-La Crosse Secures 14th Straight Men’s Indoor Track & Field Crown
PLATTEVILLE, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-La Crosse captured its 14th straight title following two days of competition at the 2015 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Men’s Indoor Track & Field Championship at UW-Platteville’s Williams Fieldhouse on Feb. 28.
The Eagles earned the 40th first-place finish in program archives with 161 points to exceed the 137 points compiled by second-place UW-Eau Claire. UW-Whitewater placed third with 106.50 points, UW-Oshkosh fourth with 88, UW-Platteville fifth with 69, UW-Stevens Point sixth with 59.50, UW-Stout seventh with 40, UW-River Falls eighth with 25 and UW-Superior ninth with 14.
UW-La Crosse claimed a pair of individual titles during the second day of events as Ross Denman was victorious in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.12 and Grant Havard had a fling of 63-8 3/4 in the 35-pound weight throw.
UW-Eau Claire produced three first-place performances with Brandon Zarnoth winning the heptathlon for the second consecutive year with 5,148 points. Josh Thorson secured the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:20.56 and Cody Prince had a leap of 48-8 1/4 in the triple jump.
UW-Platteville’s Jason Henkins claimed the 800-meter run with a time of 1:54.68, while UW-River Falls’ David Paynotta had a first-place sprint of 6.89 in the 60-meter dash and UW-Whitewater’s Mike Judd was victorious in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.23.
The Warhawk quartet of Devin Grainger, Zak Fritz, Tony Urbanski and Jared Denu teamed to win the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:19.48.
UW-Whitewater’s Jared Denu received the Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete Award.
An All-Sportsmanship Team was chosen for individuals that displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season. It included one member from each school. Named to the squad were: UW-Eau Claire’s Jared Danielson; UW-La Crosse’s Bryan Klister; UW-Oshkosh’s Brian Beaudo; UW-Platteville’s Adam Lange; UW-River Falls’ Matt Griffin; UW-Stevens Point’s Tim Baker; UW-Stout’s Mitch Freund; UW-Superior’s Nick Donahue; and UW-Whitewater’s Tony Urbanski.
