UW-La Crosse Maintains Advantage At Women’s Swimming & Diving Championship

BROWN DEER, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-La Crosse expanded its advantage following the second of three days of competition at the 2015 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Women’s Swimming & Diving Championship at the Walter Schroeder Aquatic Center on Feb. 20.

The Eagles have accumulated 476 points through the first two days.  UW-Whitewater is second with 439 points, UW-Stevens Point third with 397, UW-Eau Claire fourth with 312 and UW-Oshkosh fifth with 183.

UW-La Crosse’s Brooke Reynolds became the first individual in conference archives to win four consecutive 100-yard backstroke crowns with a time of 57.48.

UW-Whitewater had a strong second day of competition, winning three individual titles and two relay crowns.  Amy Spaay claimed her third straight 100-yard breaststroke crown with a time of 1:01.93.  She is the fourth individual in league history to capture the event three consecutive years. 

Michaela Matthys established a conference meet record of 55.94 enroute to winning the 100-yard butterfly, while Sarah Arteaga posted a first-place time of 4:33.63 in the 400-yard individual medley.

Spaay and Matthys also teamed with Kayla Martin and Kelsey Kohlbeck to win the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:44.32.  Martin and Kohlbeck were members of the triumphant 800-yard freestyle squad, along with Grace Devine and Margaret Lotzer.  The quartet posted a time of 7:45.28.

UW-Stevens Point’s Amanda Walker secured her second straight 200-yard freestyle title with a performance of 1:51.39

An All-Sportsmanship Team was chosen for individuals that displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season.  It included one member from each school.  Named to the squad were:  UW-Eau Claire’s Maddie Gray; UW-La Crosse’s Rachel Medenwaldt; UW-Oshkosh’s Carissa Priebusch; UW-Stevens Point’s Cassie Matthys; and UW-Whitewater’s Maggie Gomberg.
