Pointers Remain In First At Men’s Swimming & Diving Championship
BROWN DEER, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point remained in first place after the second of three days of competition at the 2015 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Men’s Swimming & Diving Championship at Walter Schroeder Aquatic Center on Feb. 20.
The Pointers earned two individual crowns and one relay title to increase their two-day total to 562 points. UW-La Crosse is second with 438 points, UW-Whitewater third with 415, UW-Eau Claire fourth with 346 and UW-Oshkosh fifth with 133.
UW-Stevens Point’s Sam Jekel was victorious in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 48.69, while Evan Catani earned the 400-yard individual medley title with a performance of 4:06.18. Jekel also contributed to the first-place 200-yard medley squad that had a time of 1:31.76. He was joined by Kyle McNair, Zachary Ogurek and Andrew King.
UW-Whitewater’s Joe Devroy earned the 100-yard backstroke for the second consecutive season with a time of 49.84, while Josh Kanute was victorious in the 200-yard freestyle with a conference meet record time of 1:40.83. The duo also teamed with Alex Gidlow and Ryan Stuart to capture the 800-yard freestyle relay with a time of 6:50.41.
UW-La Crosse’s Justin Bublitz won the one-meter diving crown for the third straight year with a score of 493.25, while UW-Eau Claire’s Ben Fisher claimed the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 56.87.
An All-Sportsmanship Team was chosen for individuals that displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season. It included one member from each school. Named to the squad were: UW-Eau Claire’s Ben Fisher; UW-La Crosse’s Jacob Kisiolek; UW-Oshkosh’s Jacob Casper; UW-Stevens Point’s Matt Parks; and UW-Whitewater’s Keefer Kuhl.
