UW-La Crosse Collects Third Consecutive Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Championship

OSHKOSH, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-La Crosse won its third consecutive Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Championship after two days of competition at the Oshkosh Sports Complex on May 3.
The first-place finish for the Eagles is the 29th in program listings and seventh in the last eight years. This year’s crown was won with 232 points. UW-Oshkosh placed second with 172 points, UW-Eau Claire third with 104.50, UW-Whitewater fourth with 100, UW-Stout fifth with 79, UW-Stevens Point sixth with 73, UW-Platteville seventh with 58, UW-River Falls eighth with 33.50 and UW-Superior ninth with six.
UW-La Crosse claimed four individual and one relay title during the second day of events. Marissa Mahr won the 400-meter intermediate hurdles for the third straight year with a time of 1:04.10. Jenna Halvorson was victorious in the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.02 and teamed with Claire Gordee, Rachel Atchison and Claire Elliott to win the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:55.17.
Jamie Ludwigson and Meg Heafy established conference meet records enroute to their titles. Ludwigson posted a time of 14.12 in the 100-meter hurdles and Heafy captured the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.80.
UW-Oshkosh’s Christy Cazzola was a triple winner, earning crowns in the 800-meter run, 1,500-meter run and 5,000-meter run with times of 2:12.26, 4:49.24 and 17:17.38, respectively. She became the second person in WIAC history to claim both the 800-meter run and 1,500-meter run four straight years, joining UW-Platteville’s Marcia Taddy (2005-08). Cazzola claimed the 5,000-meter event for the second consecutive season.
The Titans also received first-place performances from Breanna Strupp in the discus (156-3), Kasey Ederer in the high jump (5-6) and Jecel Klotz in the shot put (48-0 1/2). Strupp also won the event in 2011 and 2012, while Ederer was victorious for the second straight year.
UW-Stout’s Jessika Smith won the heptathlon for the third time in her career with 4,877 points. She also finished first in the event in 2011 and 2012.
UW-Platteville’s Amber Williams had a first-place of 40-2 1/4 in the triple jump, while UW-Whitewater’s Lexie Sondgeroth successfully defended her title in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.49.
The UW-Eau Claire quartet of Kayla Kelsey, Megan Mulligan, Lindsey Laufenberg and Carly Fehler combined to win the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 47.67.
UW-Oshkosh’s Breanna Strupp received the Judy Kruckman Scholar-Athlete Award.
Named to the Larry Zirgibel All-Sportsmanship Team were: UW-Eau Claire’s Alana Jenkins; UW-La Crosse’s Alyssa Luker; UW-Oshkosh’s Stephanie Jahn; UW-Platteville’s Stephanie Wyss; UW-River Falls’ Kimberly Lueck; UW-Stevens Point’s Chelsey Reierson; UW-Stout’s Tressa Retallick; UW-Superior’s Vicki Vinokur; and UW-Whitewater’s Emma Glogovsky. The team was chosen for individuals that displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season. It included one member from each school.
