UW-La Crosse Captures Women’s Gymnastics Championship

WHITEWATER, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-La Crosse captured the 2014 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Women’s Gymnastics Championship at UW-Whitewater’s Kachel Gymnasium on March 2.
The Eagles secured the 22nd conference crown in program listings with a score of 188.200. UW-Whitewater, the defending champion, placed second with 188.075, while UW-Oshkosh was third with 185.575, Hamline University (Minn.) fourth with 185.525, Winona State University (Minn.) fifth with 185.225, UW-Stout sixth with 184.350, UW-Eau Claire seventh with 184.250 and Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) eighth with 177.800.
The conference championship also served as the West Region qualifier for the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association Championship that will be held in Ithaca, N.Y., March 21-22. UW-La Crosse, UW-Whitewater and UW-Oshkosh earned spots into the national event by placing in the top three.
Leading UW-La Crosse’s championship performance was Sheree Romesburg who won a pair of titles. She secured a first-place finish in the vault with a score of 9.600 and the floor exercise with a score of 9.650. She shared the vault crown with UW-Stout’s Katherine Prouty and won the floor exercise for the second straight year. Prouty also was victorious in the event at the 2012 championship.
UW-Whitewater had three individuals produce first-place finishes. Allyse Dieringer was victorious in the uneven bars for the second consecutive season with a score of 9.675, while McKenzie Foster earned the balance beam crown with a score of 9.725. Katie Fiorilli claimed the all-around title with a score of 37.825.
The top six finishers in each event secured All-Conference honors. Hamline University’s Courtney Benson received the Judy Kruckman Scholar-Athlete Award.
An All-Sportsmanship Team was chosen for individuals that displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season. It included one member from each school. Named to the squad were: UW-Eau Claire’s Kellie Dougherty; Gustavus Adolphus College’s Ashley Greeder; Hamline University’s Katie Golden; UW-La Crosse’s Sheree Romesburg; UW-Oshkosh’s Krystal Walker; UW-Stout’s Kelly Huseman; UW-Whitewater’s Allyse Dieringer; and Winona State University’s Melanee Pfautz.
