UW-Stevens Point Grabs Lead At Men’s Swimming & Diving Championship

BROWN DEER, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, the 14-time defending champion, grabbed the lead following the first of three days of competition at the 2014 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Men’s Swimming & Diving Championship at Walter Schroeder Aquatic Center on Feb. 20.
The Pointers amassed 245 points on the way to their opening day advantage. UW-La Crosse is second with 187 points, UW-Eau Claire third with 153, UW-Whitewater fourth with 141, UW-Oshkosh fifth with 61 and UW-River Falls sixth with 58.
UW-Stevens Point’s Sam Jekel secured the 50-yard freestyle championship with a performance of 20.91. He was also a member of the winning 200-yard freestyle team that posted a time of 1:23.35. Jekel was joined by Andrew King, Zach Ogurek and Hans Peters.
UW-Eau Claire’s Alex Card won his third consecutive title in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:51.62, while UW-Whitewater’s Josh Kanute was victorious in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:36.12.
In the 400-yard medley relay, UW-La Crosse’s Stephen Hanko, Jesse Gambrell, David Flickinger and Jackson Uselman posted a first-place time of 3:22.69.
