UW-La Crosse Captures Women’s Indoor Track & Field Crown

STEVENS POINT, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-La Crosse captured the 2013 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Women’s Indoor Track & Field Championship following two days of competition at UW-Stevens Point’s Multi Activity Center on Feb. 23.
The Eagles earned the 21st first-place trophy in program archives with 178.50 points to exceed the second-place total of 153 points by two-time defending champion UW-Oshkosh. UW-Whitewater finished third with 93.50 points, UW-Eau Claire fourth with 90.50, UW-Stout fifth with 51, UW-River Falls sixth with 46, UW-Stevens Point seventh with 42.50, UW-Platteville eighth with 30 and UW-Superior ninth with 17.
UW-La Crosse won a pair of individual titles and two relay crowns during the second day of events. Jaime Ludwigson was victorious in the 60-meter dash and triple jump. She established a conference meet record of 7.74 in the 60-meter dash and had a leap of 37-5 in the triple jump.
The Eagle foursome of Jenna Halvorson, Shannon Klein, Rebecca Scheuermann and Claire Elliott won the 4x400-meter relay with a conference meet record time of 3:54.47. Halvorson was also a member of the winning 4x200-meter relay team with Crystal Oravis, Jennifer Angster and Meg Heafy. The foursome produced a time of 1:42.82.
UW-Oshkosh’s Christy Cazzola claimed the one-mile for the third consecutive year with a time of 4:57.64. She is the second individual in WIAC history to accomplish the feat, joining UW-Platteville’s Marcia Taddy (2006-08).
An additional repeat winner from a year ago was UW-Stout’s Jessika Smith, who successfully defended her title in the pentathlon with 3,354 points.
UW-Whitewater’s Lexie Sondgeroth earned the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.15, while Alyssa Duncan claimed the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:20.33.
UW-Eau Claire’s Erin Schoenfelder was victorious in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.87, while UW-Platteville’s Deidre Dillman captured the 800-meter run with a time of 2:13.22.
UW-River Falls’ Alyssa Rasmussen won the 400-meter dash with a time of 56.73 and UW-Superior’s Katie Capriglione secured the 20-pound weight throw with a fling of 59-5.
UW-Stevens Point’s Erin Kline received the Judy Kruckman Scholar-Athlete Award.
An All-Sportsmanship Team was chosen for individuals that displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season. It included one member from each school. Named to the squad were: UW-Eau Claire’s Ashlyn Mauer; UW-La Crosse’s Hannah Mueller; UW-Oshkosh’s McKenzie Kelly; UW-Platteville’s Keturah Vangen; UW-River Falls’ Emily Philips; UW-Stevens Point’s Julie Krzykowski; UW-Stout’s Abby Bitzer; UW-Superior’s Kate Weyenberg; and UW-Whitewater’s JoLyn Owen.
