UW-Stevens Point Claims 14th Straight Men’s Swimming & Diving Crown

BROWN DEER, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point secured its 14th straight first-place finish following the conclusion of three days of competition at the 2013 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Men’s Swimming & Diving Championship at Walter Schroeder Aquatic Center on Feb. 16.
The Pointers earned the 17th conference title in program history with 779 points to nip UW-La Crosse’s second-place total of 769 points. UW-Whitewater placed third with 711 points, UW-Eau Claire fourth with 606, UW-River Falls fifth with 229 and UW-Oshkosh sixth with 151.
The 10-point margin of victory is the closest in the conference since 1983 when UW-Eau Claire defeated UW-Stevens Point 550-544.
UW-Stevens Point’s championship effort during the third day of events was led by Joey Clapp who won the 100-yard freestyle for the second straight year with a time of 45.24. He was also a member of the triumphant 400-yard freestyle relay squad that posted a time of 3:01.49. Joining Clapp on the unit were Eric Emerson, Ryan Farmer and Joe Gendron.
UW-Eau Claire’s Alex Card, who was selected the Swimmer of the Meet, claimed the 200-yard breaststroke for the second time in his career with a conference meet record time of 2:01.57. He also won the event in 2011.
UW-Whitewater’s John Devroy matched a conference meet record with a time of 1:51.57 to finish first in the 200-yard butterfly for the second straight season. Joe Devroy successfully defended his title in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:49.46.
Derek Schieble claimed UW-Whitewater’s third individual title on the day in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 16:14.65.
UW-La Crosse’s Andrew Janny won the three-meter diving competition with a score of 515.70, while his teammate, Justin Bublitz earned the Diver of the Meet honor.
UW-Whitewater’s Joel Rollings received the Coach of the Year and UW-Stevens Point’s Joey Clapp collected the Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete Award.
