UW-Stevens Point Maintains Advantage At Men’s Swimming & Diving Championship

BROWN DEER, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point maintained its advantage after the second of three days of competition at the 2013 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Men’s Swimming & Diving Championship at Walter Schroeder Aquatic Center on Feb. 15.
The 13-time defending champion Pointers, have compiled 519 points at the championship to hold a slim advantage over UW-La Crosse’s second-place total of 506 points. UW-Whitewater is third with 430 points, UW-Eau Claire fourth with 409, UW-River Falls fifth with 161 and UW-Oshkosh sixth with 101.
UW-Stevens Point captured two individual titles and one relay championship during the second day of events. Luuk Dekkers shared the 200-yard freestyle crown with UW-La Crosse’s Garrett Runing after both competitors touched the wall in 1:42.73. Running won the event for the second straight year.
Joey Clapp was victorious in the 100-yard backstroke for the third consecutive season, producing a time conference meet record time of 49.74. He is the first individual in WIAC archives to win the event three straight years since UW-Stevens Point’s Jeremy Francioli was a four-time winner from 1997-2000.
Clapp was also a member of the winning 200-yard medley relay unit, along with Alex Loftus, Ryan Farmer and Joe Gendron. The foursome established a conference meet record with a time of 1:30.55.
UW-La Crosse’s David Flickinger won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 49.29, while Justin Bublitz claimed the one-meter diving with a score of 498.90.
The Eagles’ 800-freestyle relay quartet of Kevin Misener, Jared Krueger, Stephen Hanko and Charleton Skinner emerged with a winning time of 6:55.32.
UW-Eau Claire’s Alex Card successfully defended his title in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 56.38. In the preliminaries, he established a conference meet record with a time of 55.78.
UW-Whitewater’s Marcus Genrich posted a first-place finish in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:05.01.
An All-Sportsmanship Team was chosen for individuals that displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season. It included one member from each school. Named to the squad were: UW-Eau Claire’s Alex Strom; UW-La Crosse’s Jared Krueger; UW-Oshkosh’s Eddie Dominguez; UW-River Falls’ Lucas Hetzel; UW-Stevens Point’s Jake Fahrenkrog; and UW-Whitewater’s Landon Joiner.
