UW-Stevens Point Grabs Lead At Men’s Swimming & Diving Championship

BROWN DEER, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, the 13-time defending champion, grabbed the lead following the first of three days of competition at the 2013 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Men’s Swimming & Diving Championship at Walter Schroeder Aquatic Center on Feb. 14.
The Pointers claimed one individual crown and one relay title en route to amassing 221 points. UW-Eau Claire is second with 175, UW-La Crosse third with 163, UW-Whitewater fourth with 161, UW-River Falls fifth with 68 and UW-Oshkosh sixth with 31.
Joey Clapp was victorious in the 50-yard freestyle for the third straight year with a time of 20.50. He is the first individual in WIAC history to win the 50-yard freestyle three consecutive times since UW-La Crosse’s Bob Halstead (1980-82).
Clapp was also a member of the 200-yard freestyle relay team that established a conference meet record with a time of 1:21.77. He was joined on the unit by Eric Emerson, Ryan Farmer and Joe Gendron.
UW-Eau Claire’s Alex Card successfully defended his crown in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:52.36.
UW-La Crosse’s David Flickinger won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:39.34.
UW-Whitewater’s Joe Devroy, Marcus Genrich, Ben Wynn and Landon Joiner combined to capture the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:21.99.
