UW-La Crosse Wins Second Consecutive Men’s Cross Country Title

RIVER FALLS, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-La Crosse won its second straight title at the 2013 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Men’s Cross Country Championship at Kilkarney Hills Golf Course on Nov. 2.

The Eagles earned their league-leading 32nd championship plaque, and seventh in the last 10 years, with 53 points to nip UW-Eau Claire’s second-place total of 58 points.  UW-Oshkosh placed third with 66 points, UW-Stout fourth with 110, UW-Platteville fifth with 138, UW-Stevens Point sixth with 152, UW-Whitewater seventh with 207, UW-Superior eighth with 223 and UW-River Falls ninth with 233. 

UW-Stout’s Patrick Jenkins claimed the individual title, completing the 8,000-meter course in 24:32.40.  He is the second person in program archives to win the league’s individual crown, joining Tim Nelson, who was victorious the past two seasons.

UW-Stout’s Jessop Keene placed second in 24:37.44, UW-Platteville’s Sam Poser third in 24:44.03, UW-Oshkosh’s Sean Kutz fourth in 24:45.84, UW-Eau Claire’s Ryan Mugan fifth in 24:46.48, UW-Oshkosh’s Derek Johnsrud sixth in 24:48.80 and UW-Eau Claire’s Matt Scott seventh in 24:50.37.

UW-La Crosse’s Alex Ciesielski finished eighth in 24:52.17, UW-La Crosse’s Josh Dedering ninth in 24:53.15, UW-La Crosse’s Garrett Kerska 10th in 24:57.86, UW-La Crosse’s Jacob Peterson 11th in 24:58.51, UW-Platteville’s Joel Walden 12th in 24:59.02, UW-Eau Claire’s Nick Petersson 13th in 25:04.91 and UW-Eau Claire’s Christian Leitner 14th in 25:08.12.

UW-La Crosse’s Tom Linner took 15th in 25:10.11, UW-La Crosse’s Andrew Rohlman 16th in 25:13.68, UW-Oshkosh’s Jordan Carpenter 17th in 25:14.76, UW-Oshkosh’s McKena Ramos 18th in 25:16.19, UW-Eau Claire’s Paul Hetke 19th in 25:19.26 and UW-Platteville’s Matt Smaga 20th in 25:19.82.

A total of 102 runners completed the race.  The top seven runners received All-WIAC first team recognition, while runners placing eight through 14 earned All-WIAC second team accolades.  Individuals finishing 15 through 20 claimed honorable mention laurels.

UW-La Crosse’s Josh Dedering received the Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete Award.

An All-Sportsmanship Team was chosen for individuals that displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season.  It included one member from each school.  Named to the squad were:  UW-Eau Claire’s Jeffrey Quednow; UW-La Crosse’s Jacob Peterson; UW-Oshkosh’s Derek Johnsrud; UW-Platteville’s Garret Wernecke; UW-River Falls’ Derrek Pedersen; UW-Stevens Point’s David Hebert; UW-Stout’s Tim Gliniecki; UW-Superior’s Charles Corbett; and UW-Whitewater’s Kent Miehe.

All nine WIAC teams will return to action on Nov. 16, and participate in the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional at Saukie Golf Course in Rock Island, Ill.  The regional event will be hosted by Augustana College (Ill.).  The NCAA Division III Championship is scheduled for Nov. 23, at L.S. Ayres Athletic Complex in Hanover, Ind., and will be hosted by Hanover College (Ind.).
