UW-La Crosse Secures Women’s Swimming and Diving Crown

BROWN DEER, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-La Crosse secured the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Women’s Swimming and Diving Championship following three days of competition at the Walter Schroeder Aquatic Center on Feb. 18.

The Eagles captured the 12th league title in program history and third in the last five seasons with 906 points. UW-Eau Claire finished second with 755 points, while two-time defending champion UW-Stevens Point was third with 738, UW-Whitewater fourth with 433, UW-Oshkosh fifth with 265 and UW-River Falls sixth with 158.

UW-La Crosse’s Danielle Ellingson won the 200-yard breaststroke for the second time in her career with a conference meet record time of 2:17.86.  She also won the event at the 2010 league championship.  This year, she teamed with Andrea Kolitsch, Erica O’Neill and Abby Diehl to claim the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:29.86.  Ellingson was chosen the Performer of the Meet for her efforts during the championship.

UW-Stevens Point’s Anna Nyland captured the three-meter diving event with a score of 421.25.  She earned the Diver of the Meet honor.

UW-Eau Claire produced four first-place performances during the final day of competition.  Nicole Dorvinen won the 200-yard butterfly for the third straight season with a time of 2:06.77 and the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 17:16.26.

Grace Fair was victorious in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 52.12 and Sara Eggebrecht claimed the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:04.51.

UW-La Crosse head coach Rich Pein was selected the Coach of the Year, while UW-Eau Claire’s Kirsten Lickel received the Judy Kruckman Scholar-Athlete Award.

An All-Sportsmanship Team was chosen for individuals that displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season.  It included one member from each school.  Named to the squad were:  UW-Eau Claire’s Kia Kraft, UW-La Crosse’s Sarah Swanson, UW-Oshkosh’s Melissa Harvey, UW-River Falls’ Sarah Koch, UW-Stevens Point’s Diandra Nero and UW-Whitewater’s Megan Kohnke.
