WIAC Announces Plans For Celebrating Its Centennial
MADISON, Wis.--The Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) has announced its plans for celebrating its 100th anniversary during the 2012-13 academic year.
The first organizational meeting of the State Normal School Conference (later to become the WIAC) was held in Madison in July 1913. The institutions represented at that meeting were Superior, River Falls, Stevens Point, La Crosse, Oshkosh, Whitewater, Platteville and Milwaukee. Stout joined the conference in 1914 followed by Eau Claire in 1917. Milwaukee left the conference in 1964 leaving the nine current members. The WIAC is the ninth oldest conference in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) which is comprised of nearly 100 conferences at the Division I, II and III levels.
In preparation for the Centennial, the conference has already initiated and planned for a number of activities and events in order to recognize this milestone in a manner befitting the most accomplished Division III conference in NCAA history.
These plans include:
- Identifying the Most Significant Events in WIAC History.
- Printing a 2-year (2012-2013) Centennial Calendar.
- Producing a WIAC Centennial Documentary.
- Selecting All-Time Teams.
- Commissioning a commemorative work of art.
- Inducting the inaugural class of the WIAC Hall of Fame.
- Hosting a Centennial Celebration & Hall of Fame Banquet on August 4, 2012, at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison, WI.
