PLATTEVILLE, Wis.--In a finish that matched the closet in league history, University of Wisconsin-La Crosse claimed the 2011 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Championship at UW-Platteville’s Track and Field Complex May 7.

UW-La Crosse totaled 175 points during the two-day meet to nip the 174 points compiled by UW-Oshkosh and secure its 21st consecutive conference crown. The margin of victory matched the 1973 meet for the closest in WIAC history. In 1973, UW-Stevens Point defeated UW-La Crosse 69-68.

UW-Whitewater finished third at this year’s championship with 140 points, UW-Stevens Point fourth with 103 points, UW-Platteville fifth with 98 points, UW-Eau Claire sixth with 69.50 points, UW-Stout seventh with 58 points, UW-River Falls eighth with 39.50 points and UW-Superior ninth with one point.

UW-La Crosse claimed a pair of individual titles during the second day of competition en route to the 47th first-place trophy in program listings. Andy Novak was victorious in the shot put for the second straight year with a heave of 54-4, while Isaac Vazquez earned the triple jump with a leap of 50-9 1/2.

UW-Oshkosh’s Chris Lipke won the 400-meter intermediate hurdles with a time of 53.37, while Lewis Prior was victorious in the discus with a toss of 171-4. The Titans’ 4x100-meter relay team of Ryan Sprenger, John Cejka, Alex DeWitt and Quentin Badger had a first-place time of 41.74.

UW-Whitewater had a trio of individuals win their respective events. Tim Prelletz was victorious in the 400-meter dash with a time of 47.80, while Brian Butzler secured the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:59.71 and Travis Morehouse captured the high jump with a height of 6-9.

UW-Stout’s Sam Flood produced a pair of first-place finishes, winning the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.60 and 200-meter dash with a time of 21.48. It marked his second straight crown in the 200-meter dash.

The Blue Devils’ Daniel Drewek won the decathlon with 6,379 points.

UW-Platteville’s Patrick Klein claimed the 1,500-meter run with a time of 3:53.44 and Aaron Loferski won the 110-meter high hurdles with a clocking of 14.74.

UW-Stevens Point’s Dan Sullivan won the 800-meter run with a time of 1:53.19, while the 4x400-meter relay quartet of Tom Wenzler, Babatunde Awosika, David Litsheim and Joshua Schwinn produced a first-place time of 3:15.19.

UW-La Crosse’s Sean Harrington and UW-Whitewater’s David Schneekloth were named co-recipients of the Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete Award.

The Larry Zirgibel All-Sportsmanship Team was selected for individuals that displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season. It included one member from each school. Named to the squad were: UW-Eau Claire's Jake Zander, UW-La Crosse’s Isaac Vazquez, UW-Oshkosh’s Brent Jude, UW-Platteville’s Josh Canner, UW-River Falls’ Michael Woodward, UW-Stevens Point’s Joshua Schwinn, UW-Stout’s Clint Loker, UW-Superior’s Kevin Griepentrog and UW-Whitewater’s Cody Speaker.
