Titans Lead Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championship
PLATTEVILLE, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh leads the 2011 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championship following the first of two days of competition at UW-Platteville’s Track and Field Complex May 6.
The Titans have accumulated 55 points to surpass the second-place total of 44 points by UW-Whitewater. UW-Stout is third with 40 points, four-time defending champion UW-La Crosse fourth with 39 points, UW-Eau Claire fifth with 38 points, UW-River Falls sixth with 34 points, UW-Stevens Point seventh with 14 points and UW-Platteville eighth with nine points. UW-Superior is also competing in the meet.
UW-Oshkosh’s Holly Ozanich won the hammer throw with a fling of 186-9, marking the ninth straight season that a Titan has claimed the event.
UW-Stout had a pair of individuals secure WIAC titles after Jessika Smith produced a mark of 18-11 1/4 in the long jump and Sabrina Scoville sprung to a height of 11-9 3/4 in the pole vault.
UW-River Falls' Becky Ponick captured the javelin for the second time in her career with a toss of 126-2. She also won the event at the 2008 championship.
UW-Eau Claire’s Ashlyn Mauer was triumphant in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:49.95, while UW-Whitewater’s Angela Behrendt won the 10,000-meter run with a time of 38:54.56.
UW-Stevens Point’s 4x800-meter relay quartet of Tia Nowak, Sarah Glunn, Kelly Haen and Claire Roberts were victorious with a time of 9:14.69.
